How was your liver?

Just got back from my doctor’s appointment and I have been cleared to have the
surgery in September, even though I have to wait until the first week of October
because I will still be in school. I am so happy I am finally getting to the end. My
surgeon is going to do a liver biopsy on me when he does the surgery. My liver
enzymes have been very high for the last couple of years and they had told me it
was because I have a fatty liver, ( a non- alcoholic fatty liver) but the doctor that gives
the final clearance said even if I did have a fatty liver, they still shouldn’t be this
high. My AST was 123 the range is between 15 - 41 , and the ALT is 173 and the range is suppose to be between 8 - 54 . Not only is the liver enlarged, so is the spleen. Did
anyone else have a problem with their liver prior to surgery? Have a great day everyone.

I did.  My AST and ALT were even higher than yours.  Lots of blood work before surgery, ruling out any type of hepatitis and an ultrasound to take a closer look at my liver, spleen and gall bladder.  I was too heavy for good images though.  Liver biopsy was planned during surgery, to be performed first and if anything had been way out whack, they would have postponed the RNY.  Turns out, it was just fatty liver and not even enough to require a biopsy.  It took many weeks for liver enzymes to come down, though, finally appearing normal at my six month post op visit.  For me, it was avery scary consequence of my morbid obesity and one of the major reasons I knew I had to have surgery to save my life.  BTW, I was a brittle diabetic which contributed to the condition.

Thank you, this makes me feel a little better. I hope that's all it is.

Hi! My liver was in bad shape. I did have a biopsy and it showed Cirrhosis from fatty liver. A specialist told me I would have permanent liver damage but I could lessen the damage if I acted soon. I actually waited a year and a half...I was so scared. My liver was what scared me the most.

I had diabetes and was insulin dependent. I took high blood pressure meds. I also had knee and back problems as well as GERD or reflux. Now, no meds except vitamins and Pepcid. The best news is concerning my liver....according to my primary care doctor, I have no evidence of liver damage....he said it is completely normal.

My AST is 34 and ALT is 30...my pre-albumin is 21 and the range is 17-34.  He is very excited about that!  Bilirubin total is 0.8 and range is 0.3-1.7.  My triglycerides are 62....woohoo!! All my levels seem great! I am so happy to have such a healthy liver now!

I hope it all works out for you as well. I am so happy I had surgery and turned my health around. I realize results vary for everyone but most people see great improvements. I am thrilled!  My sick liver is what made the final surgery decision for me.      Connie
