CHICAGO (AP) — Should parents of extremely obese children lose custody for not controlling their kids' weight? A provocative commentary in one of the nation's most distinguished medical journals argues yes, and its authors are joining a quiet chorus of advocates who say the government should be allowed to intervene in extreme cases.

It has happened a few times in the U.S., and the opinion piece in Wednesday's Journal of the American Medical Association says putting children temporarily in foster care is in some cases more ethical than obesity surgery.

Yeah, like taking these poor kids away from their parents will make it all better.  Count on an arrogant doctor to think they should intervene in this kind of case.

If there were anything that could be done, I'm sure any parent would be wracking their brains trying to figure out what it is.

Maybe these know-it-alls should concentrate on their careers.

The sad thing is some parents don't care enough. Most do, but some don't. I personally know a mother who had a 100 lb toddler, and just continued to feed the child rather than take care of them. SOMETIMES, in rare cases, I think intervention is necessary, especialy when you are talking about children who are too young to have even the slightest ability to make any decisions for themselves. (and by intervention, i don't think taking children away should be the answer unless there are clear signs of abuse)

As a generaly policy though, I think it's ridiculous.

The other problem that they need to look at is the chemicals and growth enhancers that are added to some meats and veggies to make them larger. If this is consumed by humans, don't they think that some where along the line that this may be affecting some folks making them bigger.

I'm a sista and I'm NOT saying that all of us have big butts(i do and love my assets),anyhoo....however, I notice that ALOT of kids now have big breast and booties by the time their in 5th grade already. Me a few other parents were like wow,we did'nt look like that in school.I was still searching for mine in the 10th grade.

It's wrong to do that to a parent and to a child. I KNOW FOR CERTAIN THAT ALL FAMILIES HAVE SOME FOLKS THAT ARE OVER WEIGHT IN THEIR FAMILY. I bet that there families will not be touched. The ones trying to pass the law. This will not affect my children nor me but being a mother, it is just not right!

I have read alot of oh-ers blogs stating that their parents or parent gave them alot of junk food growing up. I had some junk food but it did not affect me. I was'nt the big one with my friend's,did'nt have low self esteem and etc. I'm just wondering with this being said; should they go after the parents that did feed their children fast foods all the time thus leading them into a life of obesity? smh

Your comment about the antibiotics and hormones is right on the money;  I know I reached menarche at the age of 14;  my daughter started at the age of 11.  main difference was our diets;  mine was short on milk (long on the cornbread, beans and fried potatoes) my children's was totally different.

I'm sure there are a lot of spokespeople for the various food industries that will try to downplay the connections, but there is no denying the strong correlation between food intake and early maturity.

m sure the connection between fast food and obesity is there, but I'm totally against putting any agency besides a family and a personal medical team that includes a psycologist into a childhood obesity problem.  The percentages of morbidly obese children is miniscule in comparison to the other problems (such as joblessness, drug and alcohol abuse, and simple physical abuse) that occur.  Does the government remove children from those horrible situations except as an absolute last resort?

Yes, focus on better eating habits and more exercise.

Obesity is a complex problem with many causes that interact with each other. Assuming obese children are a result of poor parenting is a simplistic answer and it harks back to the days when experts were so sure they could do a better job of parenting than parents and were quite willing to take away kids and break up families.

I think it would be one thing if we *knew* what caused childhood obesity. Then, we could scold parents who did the wrong things and work with them to do the right things. But we don't... and a lot of advice given out to parents is not just unproven, but actually makes the problem worse. Until we understand obesity better, I think we shouldn't be so quick to resort to draconian measures.

Interesting question .   I was a  latchkey kid -  my selfish emotionally  damaged Mother wasn't there for me  at all  ..  and eating  the refrigerator was my only source of comfort  from the regular beatings and terror and  slavery  I received  at the hands of my Father  which my Mother  was absolutely  aware  of and complicit in .

I  ASKED the state for  help  and removal in so many ways and they always   failed me and believed my parents lies  until I  gave up and stopped trying .  ( it was literally a life-threatening situation  for meto dare complain ...  I could have EASILY  ended up in a landfill and probably would  have had I not been  their free housekeeper cook and  unpaid construction worker  and landscaper every single day...  )

YES I think morbidly overweight kids ARE eating  abuse and  emotional neglect ...  OBVIOUSLY they didnt get that way from choices they made themselves .   They deserve better  than a short , misrable and  reviled  brutish life .

The BEST thing that  ever happened to me  was  having a caring principal  help me get  away  from my parents by getting accepted into a private boarding school ... I still  took a lot of  low self esteem  issues with me  but I had a chance to excel and to grow  that I never would have  been allowed had my abusers  been present  sabotaging me on a daily basis .

The gov't would better spend it's money working with the parents and children to teach good eating habits and exercise.

Instead of cutting out gym in school, they need to cut out the junk and nutritonally poor lunches.  Let's focus on getting the crap out of the food supply by whatever means possible and encouraging activities for children.

Taking a fat kid from on otherwise well intended and loving parent would be cruel.
