First dietary meeting
So it went well I think. She took my history and we talked about how and when I eat and set a few goals for me. The big one will be cutting out my sweet tea. I can drink a gallon of that a day by myself and getting down to 3 16oz servings is going to truly suck. But I can do it.
Also I found out that yes Dr. Selwyn does the DS but in general he prefers to do it on those with several hundred pounds to lose instead of those who only need to lose 100 or so pounds. Which would explain the low numbers of them he has done. He has said he will give me the surgery I want but now that I understand his reasoning behind the surgeries he does I will definitely be sure to be more fully educated on the DS and my reasons for wanting it over the bypass.
But at this point it maybe a moot point altogether if my thyroid is the problem and I am able to get it under control and get back to a healthy weight. I haven't heard a lot of encouraging information about that though. So one more thing to research lol.

I drink a gallon of sweet tea each and every day, and have since about a month after my DS. I just sweeten it with Splenda. (*grin*)
Keep in mind that the DS is completely appropriate for anyone who qualifies for WLS. Starting out as a light-weight in no way makes an RNY a better choice.
How many DSes has Selwyn done?

I am going to get jumped for this I am pretty sure but he's done 13 DS surgeries. There are reasons why I am definitely choosing him to do the DS and I would be happy to let anyone *****ally would like to know why in on those reasons. But I hope those who will be horrified that I would let someone who has only done 13 surgeries of any kind operate on me will bear in mind that this is my choice and my body and I wouldn't be so absolutely stupid to let someone I did not know and trust operate on me unless it was to save my life in an emergency situation. I have now had 15 conversations with this doctor for various reasons and I know in my bones that nothing bad will happen to me when I am under his scalpel or his care before or after. And if heaven forbid something should happen I will know that it was not because he was careless or didn't know what he was doing.
Anyway...
MsBatt. I will try Splenda and see what I think of it. I hope it tastes like sugar and doesn't leave that naaaaasty taste in my mouth though. Everything else I have tried does.. even Stevia and Truvia...

I've not tried stevia or Truvia---well, Truvia IS stevia, just under a brand name. To ME, Splenda tastes just like sugar---it's the only alternate sweetener that doesn't have an aftertaste. I do think it's a little bit sweeter than sugar, though, so go lightly---you can easily add more, since it dissolves so completely, even in COLD liquids.
As long as you're comfortable with your surgeon and his record, I'm not going to flame you. Every great surgeon started out with one patient, after all. I won't name names, but someone who's long been considered a great DS surgeon lost his very first patient.

Cool! I have been afraid to try the Splenda because of really bad (like end up in the hospital on a ventilator type) reactions to other artificial sweetners. I will definitely get a couple packets of Splenda though and test them out. Thanks for the tip!
I am very sorry to hear about the doctors loss of a patient. Was it because of the DS or because of complications?
