I honestly DO NOT think it is the easy way out!  I lost 100 lbs on 3 different occasions, and I've worked as hard post op as I ever did before surgery when losing weight.  The "tool" of the smaller stomach certainly helped speed things along; however, I count every calorie to maintain and exercise 5 days a week.

You can turn yourself into FrankenBarbie or change your sex and it's all good.  How dare we improve our health depriving the weight loss industry of our contribution to their billions.

The media needs those diet product ads.  To hell with fair and unbiased reporting.  News or programming, they never give you the true stats on wls success.  Anecdotes of failure despite proven long term success.

I hope she keeps it off but we know the odds are stacked against her.  If not ourselves, many of us know at least one person who lost over a hundred pounds.   Its the one, five, ten, twenty year mark that is so illusive.

I agree with "so blessed" in her sentiments about the woman in the story and kudos to her success.  However, I am truly irritated by the story.  We have all tried losing weight "the old fashioned way." I know for me I had medical issues that compounded my weight gain particularly PCOS.  In no way have I found WLS surgery to be easy.  This was one of the hardest and most intense decisions I have ever made in my life.  I feel those of us who have all made the hard decision to journey down the road of WLS are just as newsworthy as this woman was! ARGH

People have surgery to lose weight because they cannot do it on their own no matter how hard they try which means it is ******g hard to lose weight the old fashioned way.  I wish this lady success, because unfortunately re-gain is the enemy of anyone who loses weight and doesn't change how they eat forever.  Sadly forever is a long time and change is the hardest thing for most humans.  Even with wls it gets hard after the honeymoon is over.  Everyone who is in the weight falling off phase should celebrate each day because when the weight is falling back on its not so much fun, then you get to find out how hard the old fashioned way of dieting really is.  I know it I live it everyday, forget losing just to stay where I am is hard and if I ever wanted to get back to my beloved 135 I would really have to step up my game.

She has done a fantastic job and is now at a point where weight loss surgery would be really helpful for her.   Let's hope that she is able to get that option.  I would love to see her a year from now after having DS.

So lets see, fast calc : about 1000 cals a day.  Way over 50 carbs a day if you take oatmeal and rice and turkey sandwich into play.   AND She's working out 7 days a week.

I hope to god this woman is taking lots of vits!

I truly hope that she isn't going to fall into that 97% failure rate category, but honestly, I cannot see how she will not end up gaining weight back.  I give her an A+++++ for doing it this long, but with her "diet" her metabolism is already clearly taking a **** kicking.

I would like to know if the news channel will be so interested in her when the weight starts to come back, no matter how hard she exercises.  Probably not.  As someone here said: how DARE us fatties not fall into line and just do what the billion dollar diet industry demands of us.

My hope is that she is in that elusive 3%, my wish is that if that isn't the case... she finds a place like this board that *TRULY* understands what most of us know here to be the case.  What's she's doing... isn't going to work long term.

From the original poster:

What rubs me the wrong way is the ATTITUDE of these reporters that anyone who uses a "gimmick" like bariatric surgery is somehow cheating and doesn't deserve to lose weight.

Where in the story did they refer to bariatric surgery as a gimmick?? And where did they imply that if you had bariatric surgery you were cheating and didn't deserve to lose weight? You guys are too sensitive.  Always defendeing your choice to have surgery.  You shouldn't have to do that.  You may want to work on unresolved guilt and shame issues. Just sayin'

I watched this video and was elated that the woman was able to lose 300 pounds.  I admired her guts to walk into a gym weighing 589 pounds and get into a pool.  I have no problem with the term "the old fashoined way" because it IS the old fashioned way in that it was here before WLS.  And come on, there are a lot of "gimmicks" out there for losing weight.  I see them advertised in the side bar on my facebook page all the time!!  I think the focus of the story (when watching it with eyes that aren't searching it for reasons to be upset with the reporting) is the amazing amount (300 pounds!!!!) of weight she lost and the fact that she had to change her life to do it. And also the rewards she reaped from the weight loss. It gave me soome much needed inspiration.  I am a failed Lap Band currently trying to loose weight, yet again, the old fashioned way.  You may wonder why I don't consider revision?  Believe me, I consider it all the time.  But the fear of failing again is overwhelming to me.  I have my own issuse with unresolved guilt and shame.

Y'all have a great day!!!

The reporter introducing the story made the "gimmick" comment.
