Hello,I believe it would be a great benefit for me to communicate with others here who are trying to lose weight for surgery.I do not think the support system I have is strong enough. To be able to know how others are doing will hopefully motivate more.Meals eaten, exercises or activities, encouraging words or just a hello or goodnite.I have a gym membership but workout alone.Knowing others are out there exercising may help me push a lil harder.Let me know what ya did or how far you walked.I have a long journey ahead and the more people I meet along the way could make it easier.Take care and good luck on your journey.

Just hang around here on the various forums & you'll find lots of help.  Explore the different forums based on your surgery type, interests, etc.  I've lurked on the men's forum and they seem like a bunch of good guys even if they don't want us "wimmins" intruding on their private club. LOL.  I had to lose 10% of my weight just to get approved and was a miserable failure.  I got very sick and lost it that way.  While I'm happy it was in my records & got me approved, I don't recommend it for others.

Does your surgeon or hospital have a local support group?  That's a good place to meet people.  Maybe there's someone there who would like a work-out buddy.

Best wishes for your journey!

I believe I am in the same boat as you... when I workout its always alone and its harder to get the motivation to actually go.  This is my first time posting and joining this site.  I am so happy to have been given this website by the nutritionist in my surgeon's office.  I don't have a date scheduled yet cuz I have some more weight to lose first.. Good luck to you

I have to lose 15 lbs. (Done it already and moving into 25 lbs lost) I know how it feels to not have a support system, I have been through this TWICE- first time NO support system other than the doctors and support groups which ended up with me having to back out because I knew I wasn't ready. As the other posted asked, do you have a local support group in your area? You would be surprised at how many people may be in the same boat as you. Check the boards here and go under your specific srugery type that you are looking into. Also if you haven't researched ALL types you can do that as well, recommended by most everyone who has had surgery or are getting it by the way. There are web sites and widgets and applications avaliable that can help you keep track of your meal plans and intake. But the best advice I can give you, is to KNOW in your heart if you are ready. No one but you can make that decision. You will do great.

First of all, I would like to wish you the same luck and well wishes for your journey! You've come to the right place for support!

I have NOT been ordered to lose weight for approval, but my insurance does require a 3 month medically supervised diet before they will approve and since I have to show compliance, weight loss is a side effect. Right now, my dietician has me on a 1500 calorie per day diet, which is only hard on certain days. I've found if I eat healthy foods I can eat MORE than I can if I choose unhealthy ones. I would recommend talking to a dietician yourself and they will be able to help you come up with sample menus and give you some helpful tips and such.

Easy ways to cut some calories: Use ground turkey instead of ground beef (about 1/2 the calories per serving and easier on the pocketbook, too!), chose whole grain breads, pastas, crackers, etc. While some may be higher in calories, these are complex carbohydrates and much better for you in the long run. Cut back on fats (oils, butter, shortening, etc) these add phenominal caloric value to your food (1 tbsp of veg. oil is 120 calories!)

This book is so incredibly helpful to me and even has calorie information on many foods at several restaurants if you have a night out.

As for exercise, most of my exercise comes from walking. Walk as fast as you can (it doesn't have to be a powerwalk) for at least 30 minutes a day. Simple as that. I don't need a gym membership, I have my legs, shoes, and ground to walk on. Other than that, the cable company in my local area has OnDemand aerobic workouts that I can do in the comfort of my living room. :)

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask! And once again, good luck on your journey! You can do this! :)

I'm not required to lose any weight before surgery, but I can still offer you support. Even if it's just to say hello... Well HELLO Mr. Bigcoop. You can do this.
