Having an Allergic Reaction to Dermabond

Went for my 1 week post op yesterday and Doc noticed it ( i had not ironically): started getting small red bumps around my incision. Prior to, I started to feel itchy but I just thought it was the natural healing process occurring. Doctor told me to start peeling away the dermabond around the incision; I did that successfully when i got home and it helped relieved it for the day.

I wake up today and it's red/itchy all over again around the incisions. It's not painful, just itchy and annoying. I do plan on calling my doctors office and asking for a prescription of antibiotics or cream, but the office doesn't open for a few hours.

should i use a benadryl cream on the bumps for some type of relief or just wait to see what the doctor says?

thanks in advance

I had the same problem...took a few weeks to fully resolve.  I used a loofa mitt to exfoliate(lightly) the area every time I showered.  Seems weird, but it was the only thing that helped it to go away and gave relief from the intense painful itching....

PS:  Benadryl gel provided the most topical relief along with some anesthetic cream (numzit??)

This is what mine looked like 10 days post op:

Holy Moly Steph!!   mine isn't nearly as bad as you had it. but thanks for posting the pic/info, i took a shower with dial soap, cleaned off the extra dermabond (what i could, still incision healing), and used some topical benadryl cream. doc said if that doesn't work to call back and she'll send a prescription.

and thanks nfarris!!  i love reading your blog on your page.

Oh noooool..... I wasd SUPER allergic to it.

I developed little red bumps all over my mid section and puffy like that picture around each site by the evening I went home on day 3.  I went to urgent care for it I was so miserable, and they called my doctor who told me to drive right over.  He peeled off the dermabond at 5 days post op and had me see a dermatologist.  I was prescribed two creams/ointments to put on and told to take benadryl. I was also prescribed an oral med (doxycycline), but it was HUGE for just being 5 days out. So I didn't take it.  I would wake in the middle of the night itching horribly.  Putting ice paks on helped a little, but I also doused with cornstarch baby powder which was a life saver!  I had powder EVERYWHERE... my sheets were a mess for a week! lol

It took me about 3 weeks to get over it, it was the worst part of my whole surgery... but I'd rather deal with that then any other complication!   My Dr. said he had seen this before only a few times, and usually with dark/olive complected people... which I am.

Hang in there!!!
