Guys, I am terrified. I LITTERALLY have gained 40lbs. in 4 months! 10 a month, 5 in the last 2 weeks! UGH! I am SOOOOO scared. I went to my surgeon about this (my surgery was about 3-4 yrs. ago, cant remember). She was also astonished. she had me have about 12 different blood samples drawn, a bone scan (goign in 2morrow 4.). Since i saw her about 2 weeks ago, i have gained probably another 7lbs. i now refuse to get on the scale, i am just too depressed. My fear is that i will get to 237 like i was on the day of my surgery. wth is going on w/my body? i got to 166ls for about a year 1/2, then i went to 127, where i stayed up until now. I feel hopeless, scared, fearful, oh, I did i say HOPELESS?

This is terrifying.  Do you still follow the rule of no drinking for 30 minutes after eating?  I know that I have gone back to eating pretty much the same as I did before surgery.  I am pretty sure that almost everyone does.  I do weigh myself every single morning.  If I am up a pound, I know about it.

Please let us know what the doctor finds out.  I will be thinking about you and praying for you.

Thanks for the response. Yes, i am truly terriffied. i cry daily. i dont know how much more i can take (weight wise & emotionally). I am in such emotional pain over it all. I buy a pair of shorts (1 size up ofcourse), & 2 weeks later, they no longer fit. Please do pray for me & that there is an answer. Do you know (anyone) of they would go back in surgecally to try to rectify this if they can find no other answer?

You can't remember when your surgery was?  Really?  Okay that is mind boggling.

But even so, it is not uncommon for people who had the RnY to have a regain at about 3 years out because, from what I understand, that is about when the malabsorption part of the RnY ends.  That is why there is so much focus on learning to use your tool correctly, staying close to support groups, watching what you eat very very closely, not going back to old habits, and having a rigorous exercise program in place.

So what you don't say in your post is what you are eating, whether you are drinkking with meals, how much exercise you are getting.

What was your response when you first noticed the first of the regain?  Did you immediately go back to what you were taught as a baby RnYer?  Or did you just keep doing what you were doing an monitor your weight?

Were there events recently that could have caused stress?

Did you have a medication change or addition of a medication?

What questions did your doc ask of you?

And it isn't hopeless.  I think there are plenty of folks who are dealing with a regain after WLS.  So you should easily be able to find support to start getting your weight back where you are more comfortable.

How is your eating? Are you eating a lot of refined carbs? I know I can pack on the weight when I eat refined carbs. Did you change the way you have been eating or the amount? It may be that you just had excellent malabsorption and that ended as it usually does with people who have a RNY.
The first step would be to track every bit and drink that you put into your mouth. You may be eating more and not realizing it. Have you started grazing or snacking again?
I am sure your surgeon will want to see how you have been eating lately so it would probably help if you tracked your food.
It is possible that you stretched your stoma. I am sure your surgeon will do tests to see if you have had a mechanical failure.
Try not to stress. You can overcome this.

I went back to Weigh****chers several months ago.  I am following their new food plan.  The weekly meetings are very informative.  The weekly weigh-ins keep me accountable and out of denial.  I started Weigh****chers after a ten pound gain and have lost five of it.  It seems very hard to lose weight, just like it was for me before surgery.

I also participated in a workshop for emotional eating.  There is help out there.  I would undergo more surgery in a minute if it was the right thing for my health.

That would certainly scare the heck out of me. its good you are taking it seriously and are trying to find out what it is that is causing it. Like is said above try to go back to square one as much as possible and follow the 'rules' You know what they are. But to give up, it very well can be a medical cause for it too.

I agree with other posters...more info needed. What are you eating behaviors like? Your exercise? Rapid weight gain is explained by a fairly narrow set of medical issues (kidney or heart disease which would cause the retention of significant amount of fluids) but in general that level of fluid retention results in swollen ankles, congestion in the lungs etc. Thyroid problems could also cause weight gain but in general at a more gradual pace. What is your doctor saying? You mentioned blood work....what did she test you for? You mention surgical revision - yes there are revision procedures but do you need one? There are so many variables to consider...I'm hoping you comment on the ones that are under your control (food and exercise.).......Susan

I agree with everyone else... you really need to give us a lot more info..

1) Adaily food log (and BE honest! how many cals are you eating per day, journal it...WHAT are you eating? How often?)

2) Your vitamin regamine, your exercise regamin.

3) How old are you? Are you intact? (able to get pregnant?)

4) What medications are you on? Are you on any Depression, psychiatric or other medications? (Some can add massive amounts of weight?)

I gained around 35 lbs per month as well (PRE-Op) from a combination of medications, bad eating choices and NO exercise.

Report back to us and we will see what we can do. ((((hugs)))

Warmly,
Jackie

Oh, you poor woman!!  I'd be beside myself!!  OK, take a deep breath.  You've already taken steps to identify and, thereby fight this problem.  Let us know what the doctor tells you.
