So in posting about my research on my Facebook a friend of mine says to me "You are not big enough" I am not big enough for the surgery? I am 110 pounds overweight with a BMI of over 30, my triglycerides are high, my asthma is a daily thing these days, and my hpyoglycemia is WAY out of wack. So is there a certain weight you have to be to be a candidate for the surgery? Oh and I am only 5'4" so 227 seems like a HUGE amount to be overweight to me.

I think it varies by insurer...but here in Ontario, Canada you need a BMI over 40 OR a BMI over 35 with two co-morbidities.  I would suggest you check with your insurance company what their criteria is.

All the best.

Normal people don't get it.

I would respond by saying tha if your insurance company thinks you are big enough, you ARE

LadyLithia I tend to agree with you... which is why i definitely prefer to be "abnormal" :D Also I was thinking that if my doctor was suggesting it for me wouldn't that mean that I am a likely candidate?

At 5'4 and 227 lbs, your BMI is 38.9, so it is less than 40.  Your insurance provided may require you to have co-morbidities but you won't know unless you ask them and take the guesswork out of it. :)

How can I figure out my current BMI?  I think my surgeon mentioned it but I didn't catch it. Today, I weigh 259 and am 5 ft 4 in. Thank you.

Hi - at the top of the OH page, click "Tools" then click "BMI Calculator".  It does the math for you! :)  Right now, your BMI is 44.4 with a weight of 259 and height of 5'4.

From what I read on a couple of other WLS sites it seems that I do have two co-morbidities after all with the depression and hypoglycemia and high cholesterol. So that would make sense as to why my doc recommended me for WLS.

High cholesterol? Definitely take a look at the DS. After the DS, 80% of the fat/cholesterol you eat is NOT absorbed. This is why you'll see DSers eating TONS of fat and having cholesterol numbers of 90 to 120.
