OT: Government waste (BTW: it's OT!)

The house cleaning needs to begin in DC and continue all the way down to City Government. I was a city government employee for years and while they were small cities there was still some waste, mostly in the form of employees that did not put in 8 hours work for 8 hours pay. I don't think I was very popular sometimes. LOL

Thirty years ago, when i met my husband, he was in the Navy. One day we were on the base and drove past all the barracks. There were piles and I mean high piles of chairs, beds, desks, etc on the lawns. I asked him what was going on and he said they were redoing the rooms. I asked him what they were going to do with the stuff in the piles and he said the items were going to be thrown away.
We are talking nice Captains beds, desks that were perfectly fine, and solid oak chairs. Even my silly 17 year old mind couldn't wrap around the waste I was looking at. To this day I remember that and it makes me really upset at all the money wasted when it didn't need to be. I mean we are not talking about junky crap, but stuff that could have at least been donated to the needy or used for years to come. Perhaps the mattresses were worn out or something but solid oak Captains beds?
Don't get me wrong, my youngest is in the Navy and I certainly don't want him sleeping on a 30+ year old mattress or having a moldy bathroom or something like that, but a desk that is still okay? Well, if it's a little out of date why throw it away? That stuff doesn't rot away. ( I do admit I am a bit of a tightwad about stuff, but really...)
Anyway, since that day, government waste really gets my goat. No matter how big or small.
