Is there a substitute for nsaids???
I'm getting close to meeting the surgeon. I have end stage osteoarthritis in my knees and have lived on nsaids for years. I am a heavy weight and thought that by now (78 pounds lost pre op) that my knees would be better enough to stop them. My knees and walking are so much better than they were, but without nsaids I am in so much pain.
My doctor recommends Tylelol as a replacement... that's like giving a whale a tic tac. Has anyone found something more potent? Thanks!!

We CAN take NSAIDS. That's the reason many people with arthritis and other inflammatory issues chose the DS. Everyone needs to be careful with them (including non-WLS patients), but they are fine, otherwise.

Which form of WLS are you planning to have? Given your BMI and your need for NSAIDs, I sincerely hope it's the DS.
The DS retains the pylorus and all normal stomach function, including the ability to take NSAIDs. It also has the very BEST long-term, maintained weight loss, especially for those of us with a starting BMI greater than 50, and it's the vesy best at resolving or preventing co-morbs like diabetes and high cholesterol.
I was dx'd with severe arthritis at age 20, and when I decided at age 45 I HAD to have WLS, I knew I'd also have to find a form of it that would allow me to still take NSAIDs. Thank goodness I learned about the DS! While losing 173 pounds has really helped me with the pain of arthritis, there's nothing that's going to reverse the damage caused by a lifetime of morbid obesity. I'm able to be SO much more active now, but I also still take NSAIDs daily.

My surgeon allows Nsaids with restrictions and I've been taking them since I was about a year post op. Many surgeons have relaxed their "no nsaids" policy since they came out with gelcaps which are much easier on our pouches. My doc allows them only on a full stomach, after a meal or eat yogurt or crackers before taking them. He asks we only take them for short periods of time - after dental work, sports injury, etc. Many have chronic pain that Tylenol won't take care of and we have to worry about the effects on the liver from Tylenol as post ops also. Check with your doc but mine allows Advil, Motrin, etc. (No aleve though) for pain and inflammation and has for years for his post op patients. I've taken it these last 8 yrs without a problem. If you've had an ulcer your doc will still recomment you not take them, but most of us do without any complications.
