WOW Moments!
Wow there have been so many WOW moments in the past 17 months since my surgery:
being able to sit in any chair without hurting my hips,
walking without having to stop and catch my breath,
being able to put on jeans and a t shirt,
going from a 30/32 to a 16/18,
being able to take a bath withou****er spilling over the edge of the tub,
sitting on my hubby's lap,
having my kids hug me all the way around my waist,
seeing the reaction of those that haven't seen in a while, fitting into a regular sized wheelchair when at the hospital.
Truly these are just a few; I am so thankful that I was able to have the surgery and have done so well thus far. My daughter is getting married in September so hopefully I will be able to be an active Grandma very soon :).

My first WOW! moment was 6 days after my surgery (when I felt the absolute fatest) and I got on the scale at my surgeons office and saw that I had actually lost 12 lbs when in my mind those 6 days I had thought I had gained weight from atleast the fluids, or something!! Needless to say, that day was so amazing and I dont think the smile came off of my face until AFTER I was asleep!!
Wow moments happen on a daily basis these days! Here are some:
1) painting my toenails for the first time in years. Before, bending over took my breath away and it was too uncomfortable to bother.
2) walked up 3 flights of steps without stopping and without being out of breath. Unbelievable. I pinched myself!
3) Fitting into an airplane seat with room to spare! In fact, big wow when on my first post surgery flight there were actually 6 inches of seatbelt remaining when I tightened it! THat was several months ago, can't wait to see how many more inches there are now!
4) Crossing my legs. Seriously! I can't get enough of it, it is wow every time I do it!
5) wearing my sister's size 14 clothes. NEver thought I'd see the day. She's been giving me handmedowns to get through the transition as I lose weight!
6) GOing into a department store to look for clothes and realizing I don't have a clue which department to shop in or what size! I have NEV ER shopped for clothes anywhere but the plus size department, even as a youngster! My first attempt I looked around and was so lost I walked out!
7) Going into a normal size clothing store and finding things that fit!
8) actually looking good in a pair of tights and a long shirt.
9) Mounting my horse from a high spot that is 8 inches off the ground instead of 2 feet! One of these days I'll try it from the ground!
10) Not being out of breath for any reason other than serious exercise! Used to be I'd turn over in bed and would be out of breath. Carry something 20 feet and out of breath...walk up an incline or steps and be out of breath. I'm loving it!

I was 4 months post-op (to the day) and walked the 2 mile for the local YMCA. I even did it in 36 minutes 15 seconds. I was so proud of myself for doing so well. I even start tearing up while I was walking. 4 months ago I would have never thought I'd be doing walks again. Next up for me is another 2 mile walk for the same YMCA, I'm hoping to shave at least a minute or two off my time.
My other WOW moment was when I went shopping for pants. I've always just gotten the biggest size and prayed they would fit. I took a friend with me and I said asked for them to hand me a different size. Well folks, it's a 1X in women's which are now too big on me. I just kept staring at myself in the dressing room mirror.
My biggest WOW moment was when I was looking for a dress for a wedding this past weekend and for laughs I tried my nieces dress on. IT FIT. My niece is so mad that I can now wear her 9th Grade Social Dress, she's 16 yrs old. I just smile.

Tammy Colter,
My WOW Moment is regretting having open RNY surgery! Yes, I have lost I lost 140lbs, up 20lbs since 2005. Yet, I switched addictions! I went from food to wine then vodka. I have emailed you once before. I realize you are looking for "happy WOW moments". Yet, I believe a that pre-op potentials need to realize the serious potential of cross addiction. I NEVER if rarely drank prior to surgery.
Since gasrtic bypass, I have ultimately been in three inpatient treatments and two out patient treatments for abusing alcohol versus overeating as I was able to do before!
Because of my cross addicition, I have lost joint custody of my children! I am sober now, finally! Yet, I am still struggling with the pain of my consequences. Honestly, I would rather be obese then struggle with soberity!!!!
Perhaps, you would be interested in interiewing me for a future article as I am willing to be honest and share my storey in hopes that it will help somebody else recognize their own signs of possible cross addiction (which ever it may be).
Please contact me if you are interested in pursuing this topic. You can reach me at (320)-290-9930 or my email at [email protected]
I look forward to hearing from you either way.
Sincerely, Joy B.

Thanks to everyone for all the replies; haven't been on here for awhile, and am re-inspiredby all the WOWs... I am three years post-RNY as of three days ago, 98 lbs lost, maintaining my weight loss with a little regain lately on vacation etc., and getting myself back on track. My biggest wow was watching my son at Tae Kwon Do before surgery - we had to sit on the floor, and it was a struggle to get myself up and down. Four months after surgery, I started Tae Kwon Do myself, and we had to learn a technique for someone choking us on the ground that included rolling and springing to our feet, and I DID it!! Back to Tae Kwon Do after the vacations in August is a must - surgery made the weight loss easy, but keeping up the activity is key... - Sarah
