Linda, Can you get a prescription of Welbutrin? It helps not only cope with the Nicotine craving but seems to be a bit of an appetite suppressant as well. I quit about 16months ago and still chew sugarless gum like I'm getting paid to do it. Dx

I am literally battling this with you right now. I was so bad that my kids who have wanted me to quit for years volunteered to buy me some cigs so i could calm down. When i went to see my rheumatologist yesterday my BP was 171/106 and I told him everything that was going on and how hard i was trying to quit smoking. Not that i'm advocating this for anyone but he took out his pen and gave me a 2 weeks script for Xanax to get me through the stresses of testing, pre-op jitters and nicotine fright fests (errr withdrawal). i am also using Smoke Away bought it at walgreens $42.99. It helps a ton with the cravings but did nothing for my mouth or temper. It is 3:30 pm here and the xanax seems to be making a major difference in my tempermant. SOOOO, if you don't want a narcotic or your doc doesn't want you to have one try chamomile tea, or anything else that will relax you. I was so bad my family threatened to take me to Griffen Memorial Hospital and request a padded room for 72 hours. It only takes 7 days for the nicotine to work it's way through your system per my PCP so if you can make it that far you have teh physical addiction licked. However, the flu and nightmare withdrawal can hang for a while. Try hard candy or anything that may be able to make you sleep more through the first 36 hours. I have tried for over 10 years to quit. I've smoked over a pack a day for over 23 years. Nothing has every worked but I am finding that the Smoke Away/Xanax combo is really making a difference. I have have no cigs at all since 8 PM last nite. I will be keeping you in my prayers. Just remember anything that relaxes you, hot baths, chamomile tea, get a no smoking hotel room if you can afford it, and change your routine around as much as possible.

Believe it or not (provided my PCP is as good a doc as I think he is) once oyu have quit smoking for a while the heartburn and even reflux will subside because ciggies increase tummy acid production. My PCP has been on me for about 5 years to seriously quit we tried everything from hypnosis to zyban with no success. But, I think they were all just practice to make this quit a success. You and I both know that the "B****" phase will pass, but my kids and even my pets have decided that it's much safer to room away from me until i've had my "happy pills" .... lol. Feel free to e-mail me if you need someone to scream at that is feelign the same way.

The one thing my doc did say (and has told me for years) is every time you get a crave drink as much water as you can handle. He said after a while you will begin to crave the water instead of the cig. It did not work in the past for me but now because I absolutely have to quit i'm adding this to all i said above and praying for the best outcome.

Linda, I wanted to just say congrats on quitting smoking. That is very hard. I watched my hubby struggle with quitting. I know he had some really bad mood swings. They will get better. As for eating, I know he started eating a lot more too. Amy
