Police: SC woman kills dog because it chewed Bible

Monday, January 24, 2011

Columbia, S.C. (AP) --

Authorities have charged a South Carolina woman with felony animal cruelty, saying she hanged her nephew's pit bull from a tree with an electrical cord and burned its body because the dog chewed on her Bible.

Animal control officers said Monday that 65-year-old Miriam Smith told them she killed a female dog named Diamond because it was a "devil dog" and she worried it could harm neighborhood children. Authorities said bond wasn't immediately set for Smith, *****mains jailed in Spartanburg County after her weekend arrest.

Officials said she didn't have an attorney yet.

She faces 180 days to five years in prison if convicted.

Authorities say the remains of the dog were found under a pile of grass with part of an electrical cord around its neck.

Emmm, followers probably is not the right word here, any more than xians in a church could be said to be followers of the priest or minister.

People of all varieties read and respond to these posts. The interesting and informative part is the information shared. LeaAnn happens to be the person who pulls articles from various sources and and posts it for those of us interested. So while I appreciate the fact that she does this I'm far from a follower of anyone. I think the term follower can only rightly be applied to those believe without question or examination. That's why that particular term better fits most church goers.

You are correct, which is why i quoted and explained that it was just a term used for lack of a better word. Just reading through the comments and posts in these threads have me confused of its purpose.

That is only correct if you want rather negatively to describe us as something that we are not namely, non-theists (if your skin is Black, Brown or a variety of shades in-between, do you hold your head up high when called 'non-White'?). Referring to us as atheists is a bit of a disingenuous posture because it assumes that theism is the yardstick against which we are all measured, thereby giving theism undeserved credibility. And what exactly is credible about a large number of people taking for granted a wild, unprovable claim that there is a god? Believers don't exactly deserve a pat on the back for that, rather a slap upside the head for not demanding proof. Most of us prefer to describe ourselves more positively as something that we actually are. Therefore, we're a.k.a. ("also known as," if you're pedantic about using abbreviations correctly) intellectuals, philosophers, skeptics, rational thinkers, secularists and heathens.

Whew, luckily im not pedantic about using abbreviations correctly. As long as my point gets across, it works for me.

So, you are referring to yourself as an intellectual, philosopher, skeptic, rational thinker, secularist and a heathen? And when you say "we're", who are you referring to, those that i referred to as "followers"? Which, by the way, was NOT said as a derogatory statement and i hope you didnt take it as so!

Well, I can't speak for Neeven, but I am actually a secularly intellectual philosophical thinker of rational thoughts, with just a pinch of heathen thrown in for spice, but I wouldn't go so far as to call myself skeptical.

Finigan, I love your skepticism of my definition. But on an extremely serious note that has nothing to do with cruelty to animals, upon further reflection I'm removing 'heathen' from the way I want to be referred to. It too implies something that one is not, namely a xian, Jew or, depending on your dictionary, muslim.

Neeven your skill with words blows me away. I love reading what you post!

I agree about 'heathen.' That word is never used in describing oneself but always as a derogatory term applied to indicate otherness. It is designed to make the person called heathen appear as less than, or less worthy. So, as far as a self descriptor it's a good one to lose.

Although, I really am a bit of an old heathen. Old habits are hard to break.
