Eating with a DS, PART 2: Another Day in the Life (pics!)

I am a RNYer, but I embrace fat. I absorb more of it than you do but luckily ghetto booties are a hot commodity in my neck of the woods. So all that is to say…aside from my pouch’s seeming hatred of all red meat, your daily plan doesn’t look THAT much different from the actual things that I eat (or their quantities…like I said…aside from red meat). But somehow I don’t get as many gross calories as you do. I probably need them. It’s probably why I stalled out so early.

Sigh…back to staring at your bacon…

Hi Nik,

Funny you should say that. I showed this to my DH, and he was astounded that it came to 3000+ calories, since he eats about double my portion size, but only gets about 2000 per day.

Looking at it, a whole lot of my gross calories are from fat that I go above and beyond with. I actuallly make a concerted effort to add a significant amount to keep my skin, hair and digestive system happy.

So, I'll fix up a meal for my family and then add extra butter or cheese to my portion. The heavy cream in my protein shakes really adds up too (but it does make them yummy).

So excited to about this post.  I wanted to participate but am rather technologically challenged.  So glad that this is a realistic portrayal of the DS!

I'm really glad you enjoyed! Thanks for participating in spirit, anyway. If you can work out the technological hurdles for next time, I'd love to see a day in the life of a 7-year vet.

Jenna - You absolutely rock!  You've managed to teach about the DS lifestyle without alienating anyone. What's next for you? Brokering Middle East peace?

I can't eat half of what you do, even with a 50 French bougie. I hope my DS is more like yours when it grows up! My pre-DS math caloric intake is usually between 1400 and 1600 calories, 30 to 50 net carbohydrates. I think there are probably a lot of DSers more like me than you.

I've also been taking a bit of a vacation from OH. As I hoped, it's tempering my disappointment over my slow rate of loss, since I'm not so constantly comparing myself to others. I also seem to be losing marginally faster, lol. Metabolism is an enigmatic beast!

Thank you for starting this amazing post!

Thanks, Lenore!

I have missed seeing you around OH as much, but I totally understand the need to take a break. I get into the comparing game too, and it can be especially frustrating when things aren't progressing quite the way we want them to.

You have done so well with your DS and come so far. But I know, from personal experience, how the last 20-30 lbs can haunt us and taunt us.

So funny to me, the differences between DSers and what works for us. That is part of why I'm glad others joined in this time around. If I ate 1400-1600 gross calories, my body would go into starvation mode and I would not lose a thing! Metabolism is an enigmatic beast indeed.  I hope your recent loss continues apace.

Good to see you and thanks again for chiming in.

Am I too late to play. I did my pictures of todays exploits. It was a good day, busy, but awesome none the less.

I started the morning out with a big breakfast. Today was one of my bottomless pit days.

I had three eggs with cheese and a slice of protein toast. Took me quite a while to eat all of it, but it was worth it.

Then i had some bacon a couple hours later for a snack.

I was running errands today so I grabbed some KFC for dinner. I am still kinda working on this for a midnight snack right now.

This evening i had a double scoop protein coffee with heavy cream

Later while i watched a movie i had some popcorn and a soda

All in all it was a great day. I really never felt deprived at all. I love my DS.

Yum! Thanks for playing, Rena. Looks like a yummy day.

Funny how many of us were on a popcorn kick.

A big thank you to all who took pictures and documented what you ate!  I'm glad I came back to this thread a few times to catch the additional entries.

19 month post-op DSer: I took a few pics of what I ate yesterday, but in the interest of time (and the fact that it's a pain in the butt to post them) I'm just going to list the breakdown....

What I ate yesterday
Breakfast:  6 slices bacon, 4 small slices monterrey jack cheese, cup of tea with full fat creamer

Lunch: Taco meat mixed with a little spanish rice, lots of cheese, sour cream, salsa, and peppers....ate about 1 serving (7 chips) whole grain tortilla chips to scoop it up

Snack: 1/2 of a stick of beef jerky

Snack
: 1/2 cup Chocolate Chex Mix

Dinner: About 3 oz of a sirloin tip roast with roasted potatoes and a couple bites of green beans and sugar snap peas

Dinner #2: (yes, I ate two dinners) 1/2 of a small sub sandwich with deli ham, turkey, salami, white american cheese and ranch dressing (picked around most of the bread)

Snack:  2 oreo cookies

Here are my estimated totals (Not entirely accurate because I don't usually eat a "whole" anything so its hard to guess exactly how much but it should be pretty close)
Total Calories:  1826
Fat:  102.4
Protein: 110.6
Carbs: 115.2
(Keep in mind I am in maintenance mode, been at goal for 7 months)

Totals using DS Math (if I did it right):
Total Calories Absorbed:  836.83
Fat Calories Absorbed:  184.32
Protein Calories Absorbed: 265.44
Sugar Carbs Absorbed: 276.48
Complex Carbs Absorbed: 110.59

And that is a typical day of eating at 19 months out for me!!!
 Best Wishes,
Tammy
