Eating with a DS, PART 2: Another Day in the Life (pics!)

OMG those chinese buffet pics just about sent me over the edge.   I know my day is coming, but in the meantime it's what I dream of. So here's the question of the day - if chinese food only fills you up for about an hour preop, how long does it fill you up postop?

Oh my GOSH Larissa ~ ~ ~ YUM - OOOOOOOO!  I love Eggs Benedict and Corn Beef Hash!  I am going to have to try this!  A little eatery here makes a corn beef scramble and it is awesome too with scram. eggs, hash, peppers and onions!  Man am I salivating right now!  lol

I just bought some tortilla wraps and have been making Yorkie's egg burritos the last few mornings.  Now I am going to make a quesadilla for a snack!

I also love popcorn!  I work at our high school basketball games and ALWAYS have to have my own bag!  YUM!  So glad it agrees with my anatomy!

I have to make my double protein coffees in the big blender ball cup. Need LOTS of coffee with a double scoop!

DH and I went to a buffet last week and I wasn't really hungry. so I got a drink and sat and talked while he ate.  I then got a to-go box and filled that baby up with steak, turkey, shrimp, chicken thighs...  ate lunch off of that one box all week!  I certainly got my $$$$ worth.  But I love Jenna's thought that she doesn't worry about getting her $$s worth because she always got more than her $$s worth pre-op!  lol

Thanks to all of you who are posting pics.  I have been struggling with food ideas.

Yes!  Sonic's DCL has minimal carbs and calories, and is terribly tasty.

Hi all,  this is a fabulous thread.  Thanks Jenna Lynn for posting it.  I was sent over here by Renee2007.  Some friends and I do a show called Bariatrictv.com and it was discussed on another thread on this forum that we don't have much show content for the DS.

Which is true.. we don't have many switches on our forum (bariatrictv.com/forum).  We have lots of sleeves, bands and pouches.. but not too many switches..  As our show content is driven by our viewers we didn't have a whole lot of info on the switch, other than the specifics of the surgery itself which we covered on a segment series we did on the different types of surgeries.

Info like this is great to have.  My show co-host and I are both RnYrs so we discuss mostly what we know.. but with more participation from switches we will be able to drive content that highlights this awesome surgery.

Your pictures, Jenna Lynn, are awesome.. and adjusting to smaller quantities (due to pouch size) and for taste (I hate lamb.. ick) your day looks pretty much like my day.. even the Reeses.. One won't kill me..  A whole bag (like in the old days) just might.

thanks!  (and thanks to Renee2007 for pointing me to this thread)

Hi Lynnda! I enjoy your show as well.

I checked out the forum a little while back, but must confess I didn't stick around much because I noticed it was largely RNY-focused. I guess that sort of thing becomes a self-perpetuating cycle that is tough to break - no DSers = No DS content = no draw for new DSers.

I appreciate that you guys are seeking out and open to including more DS content! Thank you. I am not local to your area, but if there's any way I can help from here in PA, I'd love to. I'm definitely going to keep an eye out and stay tuned.

Fantastic post Jenna, and I'm happy to participate! I have never bothered with counting anything nutritionally except my protein, and this was during my initial wl phase. Since I reached goal, I'm now in maintenance and it's a little different as I focus on protein but now I keep a closer eye on bad carbs. It's very easy to sneak them in with a little taste here, a tiny bite there. I'm not carb crazy nor do I deny myself anything, I'm just saying I stay aware as bad carbs can bring back bad habits which can bring back weight. I'm also trying to switch from grazing every two hours to three square a day with snacks in between meals. It's hard at times for some days I just don't want to eat. Yesterday was a good eat day for me so with that said, here's what I had:

Double protein shake with decaf instant coffee mixed in. I'm lactose intolerant so I just mix mine with water and top it with tons of ice. The bottled water is there for my morning suppliments and medications.

I was at a social gathering which had more desserts than food. I did eat my chicken leg, picked out the turkey out of the lavash roll, and ate the green and black olives. I also ate the two bite sized oreo truffles, the bite size cream puff & eclair, and tried to eat one cookie and spit it out-it tasted God awful. I passed on the stick looking things *lol* and I drank water with my meal.

For dinner I had a cheeseburger patty with extra cheese, onion, pickles, grape tomatoes and a couple of fries; condiments are low sugar ketchup, mustard and mayo. I came close to eating it all but not quite.

For a snack, I had another double protein shake with decaf instant coffee.
When I eat sugary carbs, I tend to up my protein as a way to balance it.

I wanted to go one further and post a weeks' worth of suppliments. Since I refill on Saturday night, I decided to snap a picture and post it. Keep in mind I also take several medications for various ailments, so I'd say a little over half of what you see are vitamins I must take due to malabsorption. One day's worth is from top to bottom, not left to right! *lol*

I hope by posting this day in my life of the DS will help those out there that are curious. Also, I've added a link in my sig line that gives you more insight to how life is with the DS. Jenna, again, thanks for allowing me to join you.  xo

Eileen, thank you for playing along! It's so much fun to see everyone's "day" and the variety and differences.

I really appreciate that you included your vites too! I'll need to remember to do that next time, because I think it's a good perspective to have. That is the non-negotiable trade-off for the benefits of malabsorption, and to me, it is worth it.

Too funny about the yucky cookie. I also refuse to take a second bite of anything that doesn't taste delicious. If it's really nasty, I will also spit it out. Pre-op, I would eat stuff even if I didn't like it, just because it was there.  Half the time, I don't even think I was tasting my food, just trying to quiet the hunger. Very strange to think about that.
