Eating with a DS, PART 2: Another Day in the Life (pics!)

A normal sized person would eat 9 slices of bacon in a sitting?

I'm not saying that's bad (in fact, the intensity with which my jealousy burns at looking at that pic could probably read on my handy-dandy thermometer), but I never at 9 slices of bacon as a pre-op and have never see any pre-op (including my 6'7, eats anything and still only has 3% body fat stepdad) do so either.

But boy would I love to! (All that is to say this post is NOT a criticism, but just a point of order).

No, pretty normal looking.  Now if she had grits, hash browns, biscuits, and gravy on that plate I can see a normal person's bacon count going down.

How much does an average slice of cooked bacon weigh do you think?  I would guess that all those slices of bacon weighed less than 3 ounces total. Ya think a normie could only possibly eat just a slice or two before keeling over from fullness?  I can see a skinny person skipping the grits and going straight for the protein at breakfast.  At least that's what my skinny friends and family do anyway.

That's my point. There's other stuff on the plate that would drive the bacon count down.

I heart bacon, by the way. I usually eat turkey bacon (for some reason, it appeals to me more as a daily choice...I can't explain that).

FWIW, I think that's where non-ops go wrong. If they skip the carbs, they don't up the protein and go around starving...which leads to relapses.

I take your point. I definitely would not have eaten 9 slices of bacon pre-op. Not that I couldn't have, but I was busy eating more carby stuff. When my family indulges in bacon, they will have 2-4 slices each. But then, it is not a health food for them like it is for me. (And I get that you get this.)

That said, I do want to clarify that this was not standard bacon. It was Oscar Mayer center cut - thinner with more protein and less fat than other brands. It cooks up small, thin and crisp. A 12 ounce package contains 16 slices and cooks down to 4 ounces.

So my breakfast contained just over 2 ounces of bacon, there.

I am curious about that also...You know I love you Jenna girl, so this isn't snarky just curiosity.  I would like to know about that also...You don't absorb the fats ...and you eat an awful lot because of that.  So that fat has to come out somewhere....?

I'm not answering for Jenna, but for myself as a DS'er. Since I basically have a built in low fat anatomy, if I skimp on fat, I won't poop, or it will be like a brick. The extra fat that it appears to be just keeps my pipes moving nicely. If I eat low fat my bowels get very angry. I poop first thing in the morning, usually twice within an hour and I am done for the day. No loose stools, no discomfort, just a normal soft poo.

Edited for typos.

Fantastic explanation!  I think that will also help noobies in making their decision.  Not only are fatty food delicious, they also serve a very necessary purpose in the life of a post op DS'r!  So, to those questioning the high fat diet...you are just getting the best of both worlds as far as fat is concerned!

As a person with a longer than average bypass, with my RNY I have found that my life is utterly miserable if I don't get in some good quality fat on a daily basis. Exactly as you described. Since nearly EVERYTHING with fat in it tastes awful or makes me dump, I'm often miserable. I'm on a constant quest to have a "better bathroom experience" with increased fat in my diet.  Olives and Avocado.... my two staples in that area.

I love olives and avocados too. I use half & half in my protein shakes and it works well for me. It makes my shakes taste better and keeps the bathroom experience easier...LOL There is nothing worse than being constipated!

I drink my shakes with water because I've never had one with milk that tasted good. I'm lactose intolerant AND dump on milk even if I wasn't intolerant. The constipation is bad enough so that it landed me in the ER.... it sounds like such a little problem to have, until you've BTDT....then it's really a problem.

I can tolerate small amounts of milk though, so I might try some half&half or heavy cream in some of my recipes that call for milk (I use Almond breeze usually)
