Oh you poor thing! The first thing I will say is that if your band is too loose and you are starving that is not your fault. You are paying your surgeon, not the other way around. However, I think jaxmom has given you good advice about taking 3-4 weeks then having a fill. Log every bite you eat and take the log with you. I do mine online but can print it. Be sure to eat good dense protein, and yes, some fat is essential. They have found that low fat diets don't work. My nut suggests keeping the fats at around 35g. but if it goes more I don't get too excited as long as I don't go wild. Some very good foods are higher in fats but unless they are bad fats I am not afraid of incorperating them. The band is not designed to work with liquids and soft foods, so don't bother with the shakes unless you need the extra protein and are full from a meal.

As for the carb thing, that is a personal decision. I am carb sensitive so I just try to stay away from anything refined except on rare occasions. If my carb content is high because I have included fruit or whole grain or beans then so what? It is the types of things you choose. Some don't lose well unless they drastically cut carbs. If you are one then it is in your best intrest to do it. Otherwise, do what works for you.

You should be free from true hunger from 3-5 hours with 3-4 oz. of dense protein and some veggies. A whole grain can be added. If you are truly hungry before that you need a fill. No, you don't want to get too tight and that may be where your surgeon is coming from. However, the band will not keep you from eating nor will it make you feel very full. You will just feel not hungry. It is a lot of hard work but you can do it. If you were not told that pre surgery then I am very sorry for you, but now you know what it takes to succeed. If you turn out to be one of the rare people who cannot achieve real restriction without being too tight then lets deal with it at that time. For now lets just start doing the best you can.

Good luck with this, and come on over to the band board so we can answer questions or give tips when you need. Sue

If your nutritionist would yell at you about this, it's time for a new nutritionist. It's OK for a medical professional to give you a stern talking to when you've gotten off-track, but yelling and berating is not acceptable.

Unfortunately it's not true that your band will do most of the work for you. I don't think that ANY WLS procedure does most of the work. It sounds like your surgeon & his staff haven't educated you very well, and they're certainly not supporting you very well. If I were you, I'd be tempted to find another surgeon. It's the surgeon's JOB to help you lose weight!

Good luck, and come visit the band forum some time. http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/LapBand/a,messageboard/boa rd_id,5359/

I say find a new doctor. He should be more supportive as well as the nutritionist. They should be able to sit down with you to figure out why you're hungry and what your eating wrong.

Look for a new doctor....one that will listen and help you.

The lap band is designed to work best when you eat a low carb diet. Meats such as chicken, beef, pork and sea food will fill you up if you eat those foods first before you have any type of carb. I too got a little frustrated and felt like I was starving all the time, but it was not the band.......sadly....it was ME! I stopped eating according to the rules and stalled. Try low carbing it start with an atkins induction to rid yourself of the carb addiction (BTW potato chips and pizza are a no no!!). If you still have problems after going back to basics then you should speak with your NUT. I went back to basics on Monday and this week I lost 3 lbs. I also suggest that you watch the documentary FAT HEAD (you can see it for free here http://www.hulu.com/watch/196879/fat-head) and this will explain how the body works best.

I'm sorry that you are having problems but I promise if you stick to the lap band rules the band will work.

You're not alone!    I'm heading back to the gym to really buckle down hardcore. I kinda gave up for awhile and took a little hiatus. Now I'm ready to fight for myself again.

You can do it. We all can... it's just hard! But we can do it, anyhoo!

Don't forget to give your Dr a kick in the ass too. Seriously. If you feel like you have no restriction, then you need a fill... not a lecture.
