** WHY EAT AROUND YOUR SURGERY***
I listen to people how they eat around their surgery. WHY???? WHY EAT THOSE FOODS THAT WE ARE NOT SUPPOSE TO?
Isnt that how WE GOT HERE IN THE FIRST PLACE.
ARE WE THAT FORGETFUL AFTER SUGERY AND A FEW POUNDS LOST...
BC... those people tell me Something I DO NOT WANT TO DO.
New MOTTO: " WHY TRY IT" WHY TRY EATING THESE FOODS!!!????!!! DONT DO IT!!!!!!!!
Anyhow, My surgery is FEB 1st. I hope and hope and hope I DONT EAT AROUND MY SURGERY... Keeping the ATTITUDE OF GRATTITUDE AND WHY TRY IT....
**** DONT ***** and WHY TRY IT??*******
What is your experience and if you eat around your SURGERY WHY DO YOU DO IT>???
Is it because your not taking care of something or an issure that has happened or is happening?
WHAT???
First off.... it's incredible how much, even after eight months on this site, that I didn't understand what it was like to be postop until I was there. Some of this might make more sense to you once you've had your surgery.
Second.... I found out that I dumped while I was still in the hospital, because they gave me Glucerna, and it was over-the-top for what I could handle. So I never had the debate of "testing the waters" that a lot of folks have on here. I don't know what it is like to "test the waters" JUST to see if I dump, since I knew from 24 hours postop that I did.
Third... In the beginning I was discovering my own limits.... for practical reasons. I had to know what I could handle, so I would never push my limits in public. I know from experience that it is AWFUL to be dumping, and not be able to go lie down for half an hour. Things like tomato soup... a lot of other seemingly okay things made me dump. So once I knew I dumped, I really needed to know what I could eat in public, or "risk" in public. At this point in my journey I'm pretty good at knowing what is safe and what is risky.
I didn't really eat anything "off-plan" until October of the year I had surgery about seven months postop. Halloween. Yup. I found that I could eat one mini candy bar and it was absolute "food of the gods"..... and I could eat two even.... but not three. Sometimes two was too much. Then I read the label. Not good news. But loved the taste of the chocolate. Much more than pre-op. Switched to One Square of dark chocolate a day. I pretty much did that while I was losing. Once I hit maintenance, I got tired of chocolate, and I still have the chocolate I bought in June.... just not into chocolate any more. I don't feel deprived when I give myself permission for a tiny indulgence that won't make me dump. Which was my thought process when I was in the weight loss phase. I'm surrounded by sweets right now, but rarely indulge... just not tempting enough.
NOW I'm off plan and eating foods with as much fat and good complex carbs as I can tolerate because I'm below goal and need to gain a little weight. I have issues with not eating enough (a consistent and constant problem.... I've had about 625 calories today.... I am NEVER hungry)... so I ignore calories except I am trying to maximize them without dumping.
A good reason why a LOT of people go off plan is that the majority of people who have weight loss surgery have eating disorders, and it's hard to overcome them. This is a process.... you get a tool to help you out in the beginning, but the ONLY way you are going to be successful long-term is to conquer your food issues which are often more mental than physical. I never would have thought I'd be one who had to work at getting ENOUGH food in every day.
Now I'm going to sign off and go eat something.

March 9, 2011 - Coccygectomy!
I chased my dreams, and my dreams, they caught me!
when you say 3rd: I get to eat things that are good for you...but why do people start eating the cheescake and the potato chips. We need the nutrients and What I am concerned about are peoples choices.
yes I get the emotional eating disorder part. I too suffer from this. But we are given a tool.
" WHY TRY IT"
last.... at year out...you said you try a candy bar mini at Halloween. AGAIN WHY TRY IT!
This is my point. Do people lose weight and forget where they come from>? Its an honor to get this surgery and people abuse it i think. Some just need help, and some are very successful.
Hummmm... I want to be successful and NEVER try the mini candy bar. So what do you do for your post op surgery to overcome this. DO you overcome this or do you try food bc your comfortable now or give the excuse I have a eating disorder?

Why not?
There's nothing evil about chocolate, pasta, or bread. The can of coca-cola is not equivalent to anti-freeze.
For those of us who enter into surgery seeking a new life, not all of us do so with the intent of dieting for the rest of our years. A healthy relationship with food is not necessarily the relationship that divides between "good food" and "bad foods." Your repeated questioning - WHY TRY IT - suggests that you subscribe to the idea that there's good food and bad food and someone post WLS should never approach the "bad foods."
However, there IS no bad food. There are, instead, bad habits.
A person does not regain their post-surgery loss by having a handful of chocolate bits once every other week. They do not return to the plus-sized stores because they had a full-sugared soda at an amusement park, or because they partied hearty on New Year's Eve.
A person regains because they leave the idea of "normal" eating and moderation behind and go back into poor habits that take them down the path to bigger sizes and worse health. It isn't that piece fo birthday cake that kills you, or that helping of mashed potatoes. It's ignoring what your body actually needs (protein, water and vitamins, for most of us) and instead filling ourselves with things that should be afterthoughts - sugars, simple carbs and the like.
I've had an intense - INTENSE - craving for sugar for a few days now. Chocolate granola protein bars (Atkins!) and sugar-free hot cocoa did not satiate that craving in me. Today, I said, "fuck it, I need sugar," and after my protein-heavy lunch, I enjoyed a packet of Devil's Food Cookies. They were delish. I am satiated. Still, tonight, I will purchase a dark chocolate bar to keep around the house for the next time that happens.
In previous years, these cravings would be denied for SO LONG and get SO STRONG that I would begin getting angry and a bit jittery, especially when I went to the store. When I finally would allow myself (give in to "bad foods") what I craved, it would collapse into a binge that would last months at times, especially this time of year when my favorite candies were guaranteed to be fresh on the shelves (Valentine's and Easter candies are heaven!). I know damned well that THAT pattern leads to bingeing and bad habits.
WHY would I continue to deny these cravings and continue that pattern of self-denial when I know it doesn't work? Why can't I just be a normal person and occasionally enjoy a taste of something tantalizing, rather than deny myself until I'm ready to binge? It makes no sense.

This lead to people who do are triggered because they may feel some sort of guilt.
I CAN TELL YOU THIS. NEGATIVE RESPONSES ARENT A SUPPORT GROUP
( OH YEAH..... I WANT WHAT YOU HAVE...GIGGLES)
If you reread my post.. my messy post. you will see that I am in fear. i am clearly not in denial.
But your attitude is something I am not attracted to and also want to stay away from unhealthy mannerism.
I am not sure what BLR is ... but I know this. I havent had the surgery yet? I am asking a question and find it interesting how most of the responses are the people who may perhaps make up excuses all their life.
I am feeling good and I am OK. I have only a few nice responses what it is really about.
Attacking a newcomer isnt the way to go.

People eat foods that are not good for them after surgery for the same reason you got fat eating them before surgery and now need WLS because you can't/couldn't stop eating them even though you know they are making you fat and unhealthy.
You are in for a long unhappy ride dear.
