** WHY EAT AROUND YOUR SURGERY***

I'm only a few months post op but you are spot on.  The purpose of me having WLS was to put my diabetes in remission, but it is also to have a regular, healthy lifestyle. I have a piece of chocolate every night, chocolate is good for you, and satisfies my needs.  We all need to take care of ourselves and support each other, but the judgemental attitude has got to stop.

I am so glad to hear your diabetes is in control and that you have figured out just the right amount that doesnt hurt you.  This is inspiring to me.

Thank you so much for your post.

I love this answer  I had this surgery to lose weight, be healthy and live a normal life. You are right, if I can't have a cookie or whatever else I crave in moderation once in awhile how can I be living a normal life ?

more than one answer to that, but sometimes I think just habit.

once upon a time I had a group to talk about Binge Eating Disorder, and later one about Clean Eating.

PM me if you are interested in either of these.

People that have weight loss surgery don't wake up one day and decide to "eat around their surgery".  Just like we don't just decide to be overweight.  For me being so tight that you eat slider foods cause others don't get down right then.  Yes you could say just go get some taken out.  It's not that simple because the band can be fickle and losen up.  You may say why not wait on it to losen up?  You may be hungry right then or just want to eat that particular food.
It is not a conscious decision to sabatoge yourself.  Take care and best wishes on how you handle your surgery in days and years to come.

@ lifebeauty

Hope your doing well with your band.  wishing you the best.

I am excited about surgery, I have learned so much, I have talked about it so much.
I do have some fears and I am totally ready to move forward like all of you with this journey.

I have a variety of people that I am excersising with, I have wonderful people in my life that I can call and talk about WLS with, I love my therapist...  We are well established, I love my bariatric support group but was a little annoyed with the whiners  eating and complaining and doing nothing about it last night. My meeting with the surgons this past saturday ( ALL 3 surgeons) said we have to work at it.  I dont have any tolerance for people who act out and complain and do nothing about it.  Hopefully this is a defect of character I  can work on.

We are here to change our behaviors right>?     I have a lot to change and having said that...  change one at a time....

I totally respect all the people *****sponded that they eat a lil chocolate or a cookie once in awhile  BUT DONT ACT OUT ON IT which gives them a sense of normal lifestyle.

What I also shockingly saw is RUDE PEOPLE to newcomers   who I also welcome because I DONT WANT TO BE LIKE THEM HERE ON OH OR ANYWHERE IN LIFE.....  I am done with obesity and the arrogance and anger that comes with it.

I dont have expectations, I just have normal fears at my stage is all.  I think some forgot and putting down the fear simply just doesnt help matters.

I wish everyone success... :)))))

Hope your doing well with your band.  I look forward to my sleeve.  I went through 72 hours alsmost switching my surgery.  I am glad I finally worked through it as too I shall work through this issue triggered by me last night.

Frankly, I think a lot of it has to do with all-or-nothing thinking, and categorizing foods as "good" and "bad".

Saying, "I'm never again going to eat x - it is bad", seems like recipe for certain failure. How many birthdays can a person tolerate without enjoying a bite of cake. How many Thanksgivings without a bite of pumpkin pie? Maybe you can keep that up for a year or two, but probably not 5 or 10. There are few people who can truly go through their entire lives never again enjoying a treat.

But I see that a lot of WLS folks set themselves up thinking that they will be able to refrain forever. Then, when they inevitably break down and eat something "bad", even if it's just a small portion, it can often start a spiral. They start eating all the foods they missed. They figure they messed up and fell off the wagon anyway, so why not eat whatever.

This is why moderation is the key for me. There is no food off-limits. There is no wagon. I just try to make smart choices most of the time.

On the other hand, I realize there are some people who consider themselves food addicts for which this strategy does not work. Everyone has to find their balance, but for me, it is moderation.

I also see a lot of weight loss folks say they can do a little but end up doing a lot!

Please understand that I do NOT believe I am going to never and really do not know why you come up with this.

Just know in my preop newbie behavior, I have fear eating around surgery and I am not even there yet.  I hear it all the time in my FACE TO FACE MEETINGS.

I AM NOT TALKING ABOUT THE PEOPLE WHO ENDULGE MODERATELY...  DO YOU UNDERSTAND NOW???????

For those PEOPLE  >>>>>>>> WHY TRY IT?????

First of all, there is no need to shout.

To be honest, I have to tell you that I don't understand. I am having difficulty grasping your point, sincerely.

On the one hand, you are saying that you don't believe a person can abstain forever and you're not saying "never".  On the other hand, you keep saying "why try it?". Well, why not? If you aren't saying "never".  I guess I'm confused because those seem like completely contradictory statements.

Either it is realistic for people to permanently abstain from certain foods, or it isn't. I say it isn't.
