constipated on pre-op liquid diet?? Really??? (warning kinda TMI)

I'm ending day 4 of my pre-op protein shake/liquid diet (8 more days to go before surgery). I can have protein shakes (I'm using AdvantEdge Carb Control....17 g protein each, 3 times a day), plus clear liquids (I'm drinking crystal light and fat free chicken broth/beef broth). I can also have low sodium V8.

I'm drinking a lot of water, plus all the other liquids. But I'm having constipation problems.

Who gets constipated on a liquid diet??? LOL. Is this just me, or have other people had this problem???

Warning: TMI......I can go, but it's really hard to manage it. I can feel that I have to #2, but it's like the works are gummed up. It takes an effort, and then I can tell that there is more, but it just wants to stay in there. That's the best way I can explain it without getting overly gross. lol

Is this unusual??? And....what can I take pre-op to help me out a little bit??

All I can say is the same thing happened to me and just didn't make sense.... because it was ALL liquid going into my body... was just WEIRD!!! and awful!  I had to take a stool softener because I was in pain!!!!

Try some chewable fiber tablets, maybe that'll help..Coffee always works for me, also :0

Good Luck

Add fiber. Benefiber powder in drinks, chewables... you need both liquid and fiber for things to move.

It's the high protein diet.  This is why when people say the liquid diet is to clear your colon I laugh. ;o)  Not true!

LOL.....yeah, I can totally vouch for that !!  I'm not hungry at all....but the works were getting stopped up!

Stool softener to the rescue!! Took one pill early this morning, and it's already helped. Whew. I feel better! It was beginning to be VERY uncomfortable!!! Best $3.50 I ever spent !!

It's totally normal and will likely continue after your surgery.

No fiber plus high protein equals CONSTIPATION.

Add some fiber thru tablets, etc. and see if that helps.

I had this question on another bariatric forum and no one was answering it.  Glad to see I found the answer here.  About to start on my 2 week liquid diet tomorrow morning.
