Well I love the part that went over the fence last. Everyone knows that I get it and I do not share it, no sneaking it away to put in with the giblets for the gravy.
1971 I was in Ninth grade and my family was stationed in Hawaii with the Navy. My family had been invited by my Dad's chief to come to the enlisted officers club for thanksgiving dinner at Pearl Harbor. Our family came and it was a big deal to have the "captain" and family there. So after a long wait in line we get to the bird they ask white or dark and I ask for the tail. Comical expression, questioning of the head carver finally the chef with the tallest white hat of all comes over see's that it is the guests of honor pulls open a drawer and loads my plate high with the tails. I then asked any necks?? With a big grin he answered " no dear I already ate them".

It was my first time hosting Thanksgiving dinner, my first Thanksgiving after I married and my first Thanksgiving with my new in-laws. I was so incredibly nervous and of course wanted everything to be perfect.
My sister-in-law's daughter was a colicky baby and cried incessantly and vehemently for hours. We had military friends show up unexpectedly and there was a severe rain storm so we could not spill over outside from our very small house and the storm had knocked out the cable so the football game was on hold.
As I was basting the turkey for the final time the metal rack in the oven became stuck and in frustration I snatched on it pretty hard and when I did the roasting pan flew out of the oven and the turkey went sliding across the kitchen floor landing at the feet of my mother-in-law who had just walked into the kitchen.
I was mortified. In split seconds several scenarios went through my mind all of them including my demise whether by going through the floor or running away and catching an 18 wheeler going anywhere. I looked at my mother-in-law. She looked at me then bent down, picked up the turkey, rinsed it off, spiced it up, put it on the platter and shortly thereafter we all settled into one of the best Thanksgiving meals ever.
I got many compliments on my turkey that day and my m-i-l never mentioned the "mishap" and neither did I.

My favorite Thanksgiving memory was waking up early on Thanksgiving morning to a house smelling like turkey and all the trimmings. My Momma was the BEST cook and I always couldn't wait for Thanksgiving to come. Also that was one of the only times of the year that we would sit around the table and tell what we were Thankful for to our entire family. Good Memories !! I always new that we would have our favorite dessert that was made just for us. Also when Thanksgiving arrived Christmas was just a short time away.

GOD GRANT ME THE SERENITY TO ACCEPT THE THINGS I CAN NOT CHANGE; COURAGE TO CHANGE THE THINGS THAT I CAN; AND THE WISDOM TO KNOW THE DIFFERENCE !!!! THIS IS MY DAILY PRAYER.

My Nana always made Watergate salad and for some reason this always means Thanksgiving to me. I lost her at a young age, and then lost my Mom a couple years ago, so I needed the comfort of something to remind me of Nana (I already make my Mom's stuffing and that reminds me of her). Well, I started making it every year, and somehow it NEVER makes it to the table! We forget it about it and then my husband and I have to eat it all week long!
