PRE OPS: Never had surgery? Here's what to expect!
I LOVE this entire thread! Thank you SO VERY MUCH, Elizabeth, for the intelligent, HILARIOUS, informative account of what we pre-ops can expect after surgery.... My RNY is scheduled for 12/7/10, so I'm on here trying to absorb as much info as I can before I go under the knife. I'm not new to surgery, so your post just made my laugh my butt off! I swear - I had tears rolling down my face and my belly was hurting like hell from all the laughing! I've had my gallbladder removed, had a baby, got an umbilical hernia repair resulting in infection and 5 months of wound care, and then another hernia repair to remove the mesh and lots of inflammed tissue (most painful part of the whole ordeal!!!!!) Oh, and I've also had pancreatitis induced by an ERCP which was needed to remove sludge left over from my rotten gallbladder. SO... I am pretty prepared for what to expect from surgery, but a reminder is always welcome, as I think people do tend to forget after a time (surgery is probably not something we choose to remember with great clarity....) Also, I've never had WLS, so all this info as it applies to WLS is exceedingly helpful!
Anyway, I just had to comment on this thread to thank you and everyone else who has replied to your post! I absolutely adore all the awesome people here at OH!!!! It's the most helpful website EVER!
SO, again... THANK YOU! You should be a comedian!
Sincerely,
Leslie

I would add something like this:
Not being allowed to drink the day after is far more torture than surgery pain that first day. My pain got worse on days 2 and 3- not sure if it was from the anesthesia or what, or maybe because I switched from IV pain meds to lortab, but that first day, my throat ached for water, I dreamt of water, I fantasized abou****er!
Then day 2 came and I was too nauseated to drink- LOL.
Still worth it though- Only 3 days out and I believe that wholeheartedly.
