DUMPING ON "SUGAR FREE" POPSICLES

This evening I think I am having my first bought of dumping syndrome.  My stomach is gurgling and I feel nauseous.  I really feel awful - almost as if I have been poisoned.  I've been wondering what has caused this.

Then it occurred to me...

A few hours ago I ate 3 "sugar free" popsicles thinking this would not be a problem.  After a closer inspection of the label I now know these contain sorbitol.  Apparently sorbitol can cause all sorts of intestinal problems even in someone who has not had RNY!

Has anyone else had problems with supposedly sugar free products causing dumping syndrome?

Now I am concerned about all supposed "sugar free" products.  What other  types of artificial sweeteners cause dumping syndrome?

Also, how long will I feel sick like this?  Is there anything I can take to relieve this?

Yes, sugar alcohols can send your gut into chaos. The only thing you can do to relieve it is to endure and then quit ingesting that ****

I am not sure of all of your symptoms but I do not think that  you are "dumping" .  But artificial sweetners do cause distress.  I have had nausea, lots of gas and gurgling and general stomach ache for a few hours after too much sweetners.

I remember years ago buying a "tub" of SF hard candy that I sat on my desk at work. Well needless to say, my whole office had the gurgling, gassy, nauseous sensations! The candy was so good, plus it was SF so everyone (all women) thought this was the best thing since sliced bread. It wasn't until I was talking to a diabetic that I mentioned the previous occurrence and she fell out laughing. She explained further that SF doesn't mean it's not sweetened with something, and that something is usually sorbitol. The trick is to not eat too much of any of it. Now for the timetable on relief, it all depends how fast you can get it out of your system. What always works for me with gas/stomach upset is to drink a can of regular Pepsi straight down. It'll make you belch, fart, and get that nauseous feeling out of your stomach. But since we're not supposed to drink carbonated sodas, I'm not sure what you can take besides PeptoBismo. Hope you feel better Samantha!

While what you are experiencing sounds unpleasant, I don't think it's dumping either. With dumping I would expect your heart to be racing so bad you think it's going to jump out of your chest, dizziness, a need to lie down, sweating and nausea. Everyone is different though!

I think the artificial sweeteners can make you feel very ordinary. Early out from my RNY I fell into the trap of chocolate with no/little sugar and made myself sick on it! I think there can be a real tendency to "binge" on foods that are sugar free, so be careful.

Samantha.....that is really not dumping that is going on with you.   Trust me.....there is a BIG difference in dumping and being sick from too much Sugar Alcohols.   I bet if you were to look at the label the sugar alcohols would be high.     You must have ate more than your pouch could handle.   SF Candy does that to me also.     I am almost 5 yrs. post op from RNY and I still go to my knees with too much sugar alcohols.    I take Gas X to make the feeling bad go away.   That works for me.    Hope you feel better soon.

Hugs and blessings ~~~ Vivian

It is not dumping.  It is just the reaction your body has to the sorbitol.  Anything that ends in tol is probably going to cause the same problems.  I buy chocolate candy from http://mainecottagefoods.com that does not have any maltitol.

You have to read labels and watch for those sweeteners.  I will get very bad gas and diarrehea from just one sugarfree mint.  It is miserable and will go away in an hour or so, although it helps me to take some Kaopectate and Gas-X.

Dumping from sugarn or fat can have all of those symptoms, but it also includes getting sleepy, dizzy, and often much explosive diarreha.

I'd avoid 3 sf pops at one time in the future. Try one and wait and see if you have issues after a while.  Any sugar alcohol can cause a post op issues--they vary with the patient. Dave

Probably just an upset stomach from the sugar alcohols.  The label probably warns of the side effects of those.  But not too hard to miss those things.  I agree, I would just do one at a time.  Hope you feel better soon.

It's not dumping, per se', just what they call "gastric distress" at the hands of the sugar alchohols. I came across a SF pie at the store the other day that was made with Malitol and it actually had a warning on the label about this if one were to overconsume, so it's definitely not a unique reaction to wls people.
