Miralax?

Hello everyone. I have a question about Miralax (or the generic version), is it safe to take everyday? I've had problems with my bowels since my RNY, and have been taking it on occasion. The problem still persists and the bottle says not to take for more than 7-10 days. Could someone please give me some advice?

Hi Brenda,
I had the same question just yesterday.  I did an OH site search for Miralax and from what I've read it seems that it is okay.  I started taking it 2 days ago and will continue to.  It seems that the calcium and iron if you take additional are both constipating.  My book that I was given by my the bariatric clinic also states that we may have to take these after rny.

Brenda,

During my 3 months follow-up with my surgeon, constipation was my only conplaint.  I asked him about taking Miralax and he said there was no problem with it.  He said I could take it daily if needed and once things get to moving regular that I could go  to taking it 3-4 times a week.  I try to take it daily because that seems to work best.  At my 6 months follow-up I asked him about taking it daily for this long and he said that it would not cause any problem.  he did say that for cost issues, that the generic is just as good and a lot cheaper.  So for me, it does what it suppose to do and I have not had any problems.  Hope that helps.

If in doubt, call and talk to your surgeons office.

My mom has diverticulosis and has taken Miralax daily for years.
She will continue her whole life.
It is not harmful.

 Hi Brenda,

I was told by my bariatric surgeon that Miralax is safe to use several times a day if you need to.    Make sure if you do it to increase all your fluids.    You can also do Milk of Magnesia to get you going normally ( whatever normal is after WLS....LOL ).     Good luck to you.

Hugs and blessings ~~~ Vivian

I would only use MOM to initially get things going, not as a staple for day to day. From what I understand, and I could be wrong, but my doc told me that MOM will inhibit the absorption of certain vites, and we don't want that. I did have to break down and use it, along with a bottle of mag citrate (shudder) to get things going when I was really bad constipated, but only a couple of doses to get the cleansing done. Then I started Miralax until things evened out for me. Not I just pop some Mag Ox with my daily vites and that tends to keep things going.

My GI doc told me "safe, daily, for life". Just double checking as a friend who is a pediatrician said the same thing

P.S.  My year + long absence has NOTHING to do with my WLS, or my type of WLS. See my profile.

Vitalady,

does it impact any of the vitamin absorbtion? I was told to try and do fiber, like benafiber instead. I have diverticulosis and most the time am fine, but when I get stopped up it is bad. Thanks, any reccomendation when to take it?
