Realize Band Recall - What are your thoughts?

This might be a reall unpopular stance but... if you had one of these in you, would you really want to undergo another surgery to prevent the 1/1000 chance that your tubing might be defective? Doesn't it make more sense to wait and see if you have problems with your tubing and then get it replaced if you do? I've heard of people needing minor surgeries to fix ports that have moved, flipped, tubes coming detached and all sorts of things that just happen because it's an implanted device, it's not going to work 100% of the time in 100% of people, just a fact of life.  The surgical complication risks of getting opened up again just to take it out are probably much more serious than having a potentially kinky tube in you.

Just saying...

I know that was a rhetorical question and you're not expecting a response, but sure. Everyone is free to post their opinions. My opinion is coming from having a band inside of me. If I found out there was a 1/1000 chance of something going wrong with my band I would leave it alone until something went wrong, not get it removed. Oh wait, there's a MUCH greater risk than 1/1000 of something going wrong anyway, which I knew when I got the surgery, so doesn't leave me much room to complain about a defective tube.

I went to the FDA website and there's no mention of the recall.  I was able to find a reported incident where one failed to fill during surgery but that was it.  This is a voluntary recall by company.

They should recall all of them and stop making them.

The band got me to goal, the sleeve will keep me there.

My realize band surgery was 2 1/2 yrs ago.  I never felt much restriction, and my weight loss was minimal.  2 months ago I was re-operated on, b/c the tube connecting the port and band had become disconnected.  I was not charged for the new port, but I had to pay the nearly $20,000 because I was self pay.  Attorney said chances were slim legal action would be successful.  I'm bitter.  And disappointed that my weight loss has only been 40# and my goal was 90#.  But, I'm still trying.  Since the repair surgery, I am slowly losing weight.

May I ask WHY, if your band hasn't really worked for you, you were willing to spend $20K on replacing it with another one? Why didn't you opt to revise to a different, more effective procedure?

Well ...that was my thought too but I wasn't really feeling surgey war'ish today.  It's too nice outside today waste time  playing "my butcherd stomach is better than your butchered stomach."

I figured I'd rather watch the leaves changing colors. Much more pleasant.
