Anyone else have an *internal* hernia repair? (Petersen's hernia, transmesenteric hernia,...

I had all the symptoms you describe.  Intermittent pain under the left ribcage that radiated across my abdomen horizontally across my belly button.  Then I also had the constipation that wouldn't respond to ANYTHING I tried.  I would get so backed up.

I'm happy to say that the surgery fixed the horrible stabbing intermittent pains.  Those pains that come and go are intermittent small bowel obstructions.  I have not had anymore of those horrible cramping pains, but I am still constipated if I try to eat anything solid.  I do fine on liquids, but the minute I try to eat anything over the consistency of cream of potato soup, I get backed up again.  It's very frustrating.

I'm seeing another GI specialist soon.  I really think the problem is still in the small bowel.  My colon works just fine if there's stool in there.  Just seems to be a problem with the stool traveling down.  I don't know if it's a narrowing, or just intestinal motility problems, but there is something still not right.  When I get constipated, I get that funny feeling under my rib cage again, I get nauseated and want to throw up.  So then I just go back on full liquids again.  That's the only way I feel halfway normal.  So, part of the equation is solved, but not all of it...

I am interested to see how your situation pans out...our stories sound eerily similar.

I don't know whether you still come on OH, but I had emergency surgery May 15th for bowel obstruction.  I'm now trying to educate myself.  These posts are so beneficial.  I, like the others, am only able to eat liquids/yogurt at this time.  Reading these makes me realize I simply have to take it easy.

Just wondering if anyone has ever had two peterson hernia's.  I had one hernia repair in 09 about 18 months after by GB surgery.  It caused a significant bowel obstruction that was so painful.  I have had intermittent pain since so they decided to go in last week and look around and found another "petersen" hole that needed to be closed.  THey are not sure if my intestine was going in and out of it or not.  I actually still have the pain.  Is this something that is going to keep happening?  I am so afraid when the pain comes that it is going to be a repeat of the 09 incident.  I see the doctor again Friday, but was just curious if anyone has ever experienced this more than once.

Greetings to everyone , I am also dealing with all these symptoms, for three months.  I have done lots of analysis and everything seems to be OK at least this what the results have shown. I still have abdominal pain that comes and goes.

I wanted to know if anyone of you think that waiting for 3 months is too long? I am going to schedule an appoitment in another clinic and see what they have to say.

Right now I am feeling se well, but two days ago it was really horrible. To ones that had the operation , is there a big scar, any pain after  ? How do the operate the internal hernia : laporoscopy?

I am glad that I am not alone ...and send you blessings !!

Hi! I had an incisional hernia repair surgery in February. It is an open surgery. First I have to say that I had a gastrectomy and my esophagus is connected to my intestines. I had to have my stomach pouch removed due to scar tissue from my original RNY. So in my hernia my intestines were coming through in between my two abdominal muscles, yours may be different. It was about 6 inches long. So the surgeon had to go in and cut the intestines, reattach them back to the esophagus and reinforced it with mesh. But the good part was that I got to have a tummy tuck because the flap of extra skin weighs down the abdominal muscles. So they had to do the tummy tuck to get rid of the extra pull on the muscles during healing. And because it was medically necessary the insurance had to pay for it. Yeah!!!

You are out of commission for about 6-8 weeks. I was in a lot pain for the first week or so then I had pain here and there. I do have a big scar but it is a lot nicer then the scar I had from my gastrectomy. Good luck and if you have any more questions I'm here you can always ask. You are in my prayers.

Hello! Thank you for your reply. How are you feeling now? I hope everything is better now. Do you still feel pain?

Before the operation did you have any phisical indicators ?(because my belly is as usual, no bulge, no swelling). And they didn't detect anything unusual -so weird.
I feel some pain , not that intense anymore. It is more difficult to pass stool and I have lots of gas... My relatives say it is an IBS but I feel it's more than that. And all these symptoms came after I was doing some phisical work (carry heavy stuff). I am afraid they will never find my internal hernia- they say it is difficult to find it 'cause sometimes they can be so small.

I haven't been to any clinics yet (still waiting to collect more money- so glad to hear that yours was covered by the insurance).

Blessings!

Hi again! I'm so sorry that you still don't have any for sure answers yet. When I had my hernia I had an increase of my vomitting and my daily pain got a lot worse. I also noticed when I ate the left side of my scar from the gastrectomy became distended. I had a cat scan and the radiologist didn't pick it up. It was when I took the films to my surgeon that he found it. So if you had any tests done, don't trust the radiologist, make sure you take the actual pictures to your surgeon. I don't know where you live, but if you live near a big city where they have well known hospitals such as New York I would go for a second opinion. I went to Philadelphia. After the surgery I was in pain, but I don't have anymore pain in the hernia area. But I still have chronic pain from my first surgery.

Again, good luck and I hope you find the answers you are looking for. I hope you feel better soon. And if you have anymore questions don't hesitate to ask.

I had 3 Internal Hernia repairs the 1st  one was about 4 months after Gastric By Pass Surgery (RNY) I came home from the Hospital and about a month after surgery I was having some stomach pain that was in the upper part of my stomach all the way to the upper part of my back.  I went back to my Gastric Surgeon and he said it was probably a Hernia that 1 in 4 patients that have the (RNY) type surgery develope . So he went in and fixed the problem. Well about 1 year later I was having the same problems again and went back to the same surgeon and once again I was taken back to surgery to fix the same problem. I was ok for about 2 years until January 2012 when I was having some stomach pain again. I went back to the E.R. and was told that nothing was wrong.  Well the following month I was trying to get back in to see the same Gastric surgeon , and he informed me that I was more than likely  having the same problem and that it would require another surgery to go in and fix the Hernia,he also stated that more than likely the problem would keep coming back since all the repairs from that past had weakend the area even more. It now about the end of February and I was home off from work for the day. I was ok and all of a sudden I started having some massive stomach pain. I could not even stand up they were so sharp. I called 911 and was taken to Loma Linda University Medical center and  was admitted into the Hospital. I had all kinds of test done and they found nothing wrong. The next day I was taken in for a CT Scan, and the scam revealed that I had a blockage due to the Hernia. I was transported back to my room and the Doctor on call said I needed surgery. It was about 3 hours later and the surgeon who was called in ordered another C.T. Scan and found that the blood supply to my stomach had been cut off due to the Hernia and that 14 feet of my intestines had already died off. I was taken into emergency life saving surgery. I was in surgery for about 12 hours and resection of the stomach and small bowl was performed. I had other problems from the Gastric by pass surgery, I had A Whipple Operation about 1 year ago to because my blood sugars were going to low like in the 20s and 30s so the Whipple surgery fixed that problem. Well back to what was happening with my surgery because of the Whipple Operation all my stomach parts were not ware the were suppose to be so the surgeon who was doing the emergency surgery to save my life did no know who to put me back together. I was placed on life support and airlifted over to the main Hospital ware I underwent another 14 hours of surgery to put me back together. This was the worst surgery and pain that I ever went threw. I was in the I.C.U for about 3 weeks fighting to stay alive. When I did start to recover I was sent home with a open cut that was about 14 inches and about 2 inches deep to heal. I was on a wound Vac. for about a month until the wound finally closed. To this day, I still have stomach pain and I still have Nausea every day. If I had any knowledge that there was a possibility that I would go threw this much pain and suffering I would have never gone threw with the weight loss surgery.

This was my ONLY complication with my surgery.  Apparently it is common when people lose a lot of weight?  That is what i was told.  Honestly, i had a huge "hole" but i didnt even register the pain other than every once in a while.  However, towards the end, i would get horrid pain when i ate.  I got really tired and weak.  Finally I called my surgeon.  He knew right away what it was.  I should have called months earlier but as a mom, i am trained to ignore the fatigue and pain.  I had surgery that next morning.  The hole was big.  I was probably having pain because the intestines were feeding in and out of the "hole".  They work just fine after the repair.  i was back to work after one week.  I was put on liquids for a few days and then soft bariatric diet.  then normal bariatric foods.  Felt right as rain almost immediately.  I think i have a high pain tolerence because although they actually found a pain med i dont react to, i took it for one day at home and didnt have to take them anymore.  I feel awesome though i still am fighting the fatigue and the anemia being sick caused.  I am watched carefully and closely by the dream team though!
