Super Mobildly Obese Long Term Care???
Just rec'd a call about a 650+ gentleman that has had a very difficult fall that included him being immobilized in the floor of his home for five hours, medical response cutting through the door, firemen with plywood, etc.... to get him out. He is currently hospitalized in Brunswick County here in NC. Everyone is looking for a long term care facility that works with the morbidly obese. Brookhaven in NY only allows NY state residents. Any insight of nursing homes or long term care facilities that could offer care for the gentleman? I was asked and didn't know but advised I would do a little research... Breaks my heart to know that there aren't any resources available for a man in such a desperate situation. :((
Thanks,
Candice

The problem I have seen with this in the past is that the patient must be stable enough and healthy enough to survive the surgery. Most hospitals and acute care settings aren't set up to provide longer term care for a patient who needs buffing prior to surgery. If they can be placed in the right facility they can gain the strength they need to become a viable candidate for surgery. Most times it is unfortunately, a Catch 22 situation. They are not ill enough for a regular hospital stay but not healthy enough for the operation. If their health does improve Medicare/caid will usually pay for the surgery, it's just getting the help to get them better that is the problem.
Oh Boy!!!!
I started my journey at 618 and can imagine the problem. I now volunteer at a nursing home that has a bariatric unit. They have one man that has to be 800 or more, so they can handle 650 no problem. They are located in Ohio. If you want to know more feel free to get back to me.
I do know these facilities are few and far between.
Hey Jim, Yes, Yes, I would love to know more about this option... My personal email is [email protected]... That goes directly to my phone. Not sure if surgery is even a consideration right now, but I am sure it's worth a discussion...

The nursing home I was speaking of has a goal to prepare the patient for surgery if that is what they elect. It is a new unit and they still have a way to go, but the whole home is only 55 beds. They have 5 or 6 bariatric patients right now. It is very clean, well lite and the staff very understanding. My volunteer work there is trying to give the people the drive not to give up.
I have been in a nursing home myself and this would be on my list, especially at 650.
Best of luck with the search!!
