Hello everyone My name is Ana and I am new at this site. I do have several questions but the main one is I would like to know if any of you who had diabetes and after the surgery disappeared??? If so I would like you to contact me and tell me more about your experience. For now I am still searching for a Dr. and Hoping that my insurance will cover the surgery. I am undecided on which surgery I should have. I had a friend that got the Gastric Bypass and she had many issues with it and said it was very very painful. Another friend of mine she had the band and did petty good with it but of course every human being and body is different and everyone will have different experiences. Please feel free to add me as friend and share with me you experience.

Thank You.

Have a blessed day!

If you have diabetes, look to the Duodenal Switch. See my blog as to why. Just click on my name and it will bring up my profile.

I haven't had surgery yet but am planning on it but those articles are why I chose the DS over the RNY (gastric bypass). I didn't even consider the lapband. And after coming here, too many are having issues. Yes, there are some who succeed but many do not and the revision rate is very high.

Look into all the surgeries, ask questions, and go visit all the boards and read. Also read the revisions and the regrets boards.

Hope that helps.

Liz

Hey there, Tigresa!  You're correct in remembering that everyone is different - a lot of people forget that, fortunately.

That being said, I had the band done in 2003, lost a buttload of weight and have seen my type 2 diabetes 100% resolved.

Banded 10 years & maintaining my weight loss!! Any questions, message me.

If you have type 2, look into the duodenal switch. Check out www.dsfacts.com, particularly THIS page:

Best of luck to you!

Yes I did have the DS. Cured my Type 2 diabetes and my sleep apnea. As long as I get in my vites and protein, I eat what I want with no ill effects and my sugar stays well in the normal range. For dinner, I just had two hot dogs, some Pringles chips and a Diet Coke. I just enjoyed a Snickers bar, too.

Feel free to check out my profile here on OH (Click on my name). Come vsit us on the DS forum as well.

I had the DS in hopes of never developing diabetes. It runs in both sides of my family, and it's a thousand wonders I didn't become diabetic years ago. But my most recent lab resutls had something on it I hadn't seem before---an assesment of my risks of diabetes. It concluded that I was at NO risk!

I LOVE MY DS!

Hi Ana......
I had the laparascopic RNY on 8/4.  I have done absolutely great, with little pain.  I am diabetic and was on Byetta, Humulin 70/30, Lantus and Metformin for my diabetes.  I came home on nothing but as my sugars have increased due to actually eating now, I am taking usually 10 units of Lantus per day, which is practically nothing compared to what I was on before.  I know as the weight continues to come down, that hopefully I can come off of all meds for the diabetes.   Good luck with your journey!!

Hi Ana.  I had RNY just 3-1/2 weeks ago but have to say it's been a fantastic experience with no complications and no pain.  I had routine labs (not associated with my WLS surgeon) done on Monday my 3-week anniversary and my A1c was 5.6, my blood sugar was 80 and my cholesterol panel was also completely normal (as were the rest of my labs).  I was on metformin prior to surgery but stopped it the night before and while my sugars were up slightly in the hospital and I had to have a few insulin shots, we're only talking about 1-3 units and was not sent home on anything.  Happy to see you here on the boards and good luck with your journey!

I had RNY on June 28, and I stopped my diabetic medication that day.  My blood sugar has remained below 90 since surgery.
