Iron Deficiency Anemia. Infusions? Advice? (x-post)

I'm so sorry you're having to deal with this. I hope you're on the road to recovery.

That said, I have more than one NON-WLS surgery friend who's dealing with the same anemia issues. They've had the iron infusions, ablation, and one has had a total hysterectomy.

The anemia and low iron seem to catch up to us in our late 30-40's whether you've had WLS or not.

This is just my perspective. I hope everyone gets their issues taken care of quickly and without too much worry and pain.

One of the things I worry about it where the blood's going-- I am NOT a bleeder-- I had an ablation in 2003. :(

Jupiter: you are not NECESSARILY bleeding anywhere. In non-WLS people, low ferritin levels in otherwise healthy individuals (normal weight/good diet) are likely caused by an increase blood loss that the body cannot keep up with. With us, we do not have to be losing ANY blood to have low ferritin levels; it comes from the lack of absorption. Without ferritin, you are not producing the number of red blood cells needed and/or not producing RBCs with adequate oxygen carrying capabilities. This is why many with your problem are DRAGGING: low energy, low exercise endurance, etc.

I sure hope your infusions help and you feel better soon. I like your attitude, specifically this:

They even offer you a special parking spot, but I refused mine-- as long as I am able-bodied, I am hoofin' it!

I know this is an old post, but I am experiencing this now.  I found out yesterday my Ferritin is 2 and I am nervously awaiting a call from the Hematologist to schedule.  How is your anemia now?  I am 8 years post-op now, and agree with you that I LOVE the weight loss...but the hidden issues creep up more and more now, and I feel like I live at the Dr. office sometimes!

Thanks,
Erika

Those numbers really are not that bad.  Being a NP, i have seen alot worse.  So, no need to worry sp much.  They are not "hideous."  A diet rich in iron and other nutrients would be protocal before iron infusions.  If you maintain a diet hogh in carbs, you will be right back where you started in a few weeks.  You have to change your lifestyle in all aspects.

I'm seven years out....and know my body and understand nutrition better than most. It was hideous because at those numbers I was very sick. A diet rich in iron  (and oral supplements) will accomplish nothing if the portion of your intestine that absorbs it is missing or no longer functional...people need to understand that, especially medical professionals like yourself.

I see you're new here. Are you also new to the WLS world?

Here's the thing---people who have the RNY have their entire duodenum bypassed. The duodenum is the primary absorption site for oral iron. It doesn't matter how 'rich' your diet is, if your food never touches your duodenum.

I am post-RNY and waiting for my insurance to pre-authorize the 10 weekly Venofer iron infusions that my Hematologist ordered yesterday.

I have no energy and my quality of life right now is the pits.  Did you feel instant relief after your first transfusion?  My Hematologist said it might take a few weeks/doses to feel better.  Meanwhile, I can barely function.  It's hell.
