Hello
Just wanted to post that I had a bowel obstruction in March of this year. Yes it is very painful and sometimes hard to get diagnosed. I had my weight loss surgery in July 2009, And in March of 2010 I went to bathroom at 3:30 am with a runny bowel movement. Went to bed and at 6:15 am which was a Sunday morning woke up with pain in my right side of stomach and left side a back and nauseated. I started dry heaves every 5 minutes. Told my  husband something was wrong didn't feel well at all. Pain never stopped. But I can take pain so just stayed in pain all day. I thought maybe it was a bladder infection or a kidney store. I found it hard to pee. and with my back hurting thought kidneys. I also have bad back which has had 3 back surgeries. But this pain seemed different. Thought back pain was due to the gagging and dry heaves. Monday morning I called my surgeon and spoke to his nurse and was told she thought it was a virus since it had been so long after my weight loss surgery. And there was a bad virus going around at the time. But told her thought it may be kidney stone or bladder infection she suggested I go see my family doctor. I phone him and was told he could not see me until Tuesday but I could go in and get a urine test to check for bladder infection. Went in the urine test was neg for infection or blood it was clean. But did get to see the doctor which is my internist. He told me he thought it was a virus as well. But just in case to come back tomorrow for another urine test. Went home still in a lot of pain and still gagging. Tuesday morning got up and was in so much pain. and now was throwing up liquid that looked like coke. Watery and brown just like coke. Called the office and told them I was too weak to go in and was now throwing up and very weak. They told me if I felt that bad to go to ER. Because they really could not do anything for me in the office anyway and that the doctor would more then likely send me to hospital any way.
My husband was having problems at work with being very short handed so I waited until he got home before I went to ER. But pain was so bad at one point I almost called for an ambulance. LOL But figured they would call him at work so just bit my lip and waited for him to come home. We went to ER at around 6 PM on Tuesday night. At the hospital they also said they thought I had a virus that they had been seeing that all day. But after awhile and talking to them they took an Xray and it showed some flatness in the intestines. So called and spoke to the doctor on call and was told should get a cat scan and be admitted. At 3 AM on Wed morning I was getting my cat scan. Later that morning my surgeron came by and stuck one of those tubes down my nose into the stomach and was given pain meds and IV's and Meds for nausa.
Wed I was watched and kept on pain and nausa meds. Thursday night the doctor came by and suggested I go in for an explorary surgery. on Friday morning first thing. I said ok and called my family to let them know. About 10 minutes later the doctor came back in and said he changed his mind. He was going to do surgery Now! That I started to run fever which I never run. So it must have been bad. I called hubby and told him that surgery was now and he said he was on his way. By the time he got to hospital I was already in surgery. And we do not live far from hospital. Where they did the lapocopy for the weight loss surgery they cut me from sternum to navel around and continued down. I had 37 staples and 2 drains. But when woke up from surgery felt so much better. Yes was in pain from surgery but nothing like before surgery. I really felt so much better. And everyone said it was a virus and it was a bowel obstruction. I would not wish this on my emeny. When I went in to have the staples removed his nurse felt so bad that she said she thought it was a virus but that the doctor wasn't in at the time anyway and it had been 8 months after my weight loss surgery. So it can happen right after your weight loss surgery or it can be months. The doctor said you can have a bowel obstruction today or 30 years from now you just never know.
I hope this helps someone but hope no one *****ads this will have a bowel obstruction.

My daughter had the very same symtoms as you.  because of all her illnesses she stayed home and put up with the pain.  One morning she sat up and literally felt the bowel burst. We rushed her to the emerge.  Now because she is very ill they could not operate.  They pumped intervenour into her steady for 4 weeks.  I thought she was a goner.  Right now she is slowly recovering goes for more testing then back to surgeon and surgery is still an option.  in 2 weeks she lost 38 lbs.  Now she is not on any diet and has never had any Bariartic surgery.  So If anyone has any of these symtoms go to the emerge right away.  It is very dangerous and can kill you.  The drs told her too it was nothing just a pain. Oh yeah.  Just thought I would share.    Doris QC.

Hi Lynette,
Thanks for posting! I too had a bowel obstruction 3 weeks ago. My bowel was in a loop. I too almost died, and like you, they could not figure out what was wrong with me.After being turned away from the ER four times, I ended up going to a bigger center, and they fast forwarded me into CT scans.

It was very scary and I too would not wish this on my worst enemy.

Thank you for sharing your story.

I will pass this along to Vivian Prouty on our TX forum, a local support group leader.   She just underwent surgery for a bow. ob. on Monday!  (she's doing good, btw) ..
