Bad Allergic Reaction to Steri Strips

Step 1.... ice the itchies... it honeslty helps! Step 2... get thee to a doctor! don't call and tell them you've got itchy incisions.... that's normal.... a true nasty awful reaction requires then to SEE...and then whoo boy do they BELIEVE... my reaction turned almost anaphylactic (sp) over time.... cutting off my airway. Can be dangerous.

Ice is Nice was my favorite mantra newly out... heck with food, I'd have given away all food for all time to get rid of the itchies!

Thank you all!  I just called the doctors office and left a message for a nurse to call me back.  I am going to demand that they see me.  Also, I will give ice a shot tonight!

I had a reaction to the benzoin (the glue they put on to help the steri-strips stick).  I had a horrible time, blisters and all -- there are pics on my profile page.  It was horrible, and it didn't just itch, it downright hurt.  I was sooooo glad when it was over, but it took a while.  The only thing I took was Benadryl for the itching, but it seemed to itch/hurt from the core of my being and the Benadryl didn't do a lot to help, unfortunately.

I had an allergic reaction to the glue they used to close my incisions. It was a horribke ra****ried many things, and the only thing that seemed to help is Children's liquid Benedryl (no dye no sugar kind) and Benedryl cream. It took over a month for mine to clear up.

I had this happen also. My mother, who is a nurse, said that it is very common. Get to your doctor and tell him/her you want antibiotics for this. That's what it took to knock mine out.

Mine were horrible, red, raised welts that itched terribly. My surgeon was wonderful about it. I went in to have my staples taken out and he took one look at it and went "Nope. You need to go to a different kind of bandage, here's a prescription for antibiotics and wash with antibacterial soap."

I was on antibiotics for 10 days and it started to feel better after the first 2.

I had a severe allergy to the strips... it's not the strips it's the adhesive they put on you to hold the strips on.

use hydrocortisone cream and call the doctor and ask for a medrol steroid pack... I had one after the surgery and it helped:

this is what I looked like  (tmi and kind of upsetting so look away if you don't want to see gross):

Don't need to look away from that picture because my stomach is turing into just that!  I went to the doctor yesterday and the nurse gave me a steriod cream to put on it and was told to continue with the Benedryl.  When I got home the rash has now spread to my breast and most of the middle of my stomach as well!!  If it keeps spreading I am going to take a trip to the ER for a steroid shot and maybe some oral steriods, since the nurse didn't seem to want to give me those medications!!!  ugh!!!!!  Thanks again everyone for your input!

Hi, I had a bariatric revision, lapband to gastric sleeve, Dec. 29, 2015. I was told I have an allergy to the surgical glue and it sounds like the same problem you had. Can you tell me how long it lasted and what the curing treatment was? I have had 2 courses if prednisone and it almost clears up then comes back!

TKU for your help
