Are you a food addict? How can you tell?
Dictionary.com describes an addict as "a person who is dependant on a substance or drug". So I guess we are addicts of a sort since we are dependant on food to live. I however do not consider my self an "addict" as in a compulsive over-eater, but i have discovered that I am a "grazer" and am finding that a very hard habit to break. So I try to limit myself to high quality high protein choices.
This one's simple... I read through the OP and nodded my head at each reason and said "yep, that would be me"
Funny how we all share the same experiences. It wasn't until AFTER WLS that I admitted to being a stress eater. I guess I was so numb to what I thought was normal eating, that I didn't realize I really did have a problem with the amount of food I ate. Again, WLS is just a tool. A very powerful tool that allows you to come face to face with your demons and say "I CAN DO THIS!"

I realized I was a food addict when I started sneaking food at times when I wouldn't have to share it with my kids.

I asked at my support group meeting about are we food addicts. The answer was yes. It was brought out that is why we are all here. Over the years our love of food has made us obese. This topic created quite a good discussion. Some of the recurring responses that were brought up over and over I posted here. How can you tell: Thinking about your next meal, eating too much, eating the wrong things, not eat our protien 1st, thinking about food all the time, can't throw food away, just love food - all food, and sneaking food.
Have A Wonderful Day!!

I realized I was a food addict before surgery because I:
ate in private/hid the amount I was eating
couldn't pass up a fast food restaurant if I was in my car alone
ate for the pleasure of it, not for hunger
got happiness from food
Post op, I realize the issues are still there, although I'm not acting on them. I still find myself absentmindedly thinking, "Oh I'll go through the drive thru, that will taste good." Then I realize it and can't believe the tendency is still there even though "ugh" I can't stand the taste of that food now. It makes me nauseous.
