"Fat Cow" in the pool (help!)

As a fat person I always wore shorts with my swimsuit.  That made everything all better for me although I'm sure that people made comments that I could not hear.  Now I don't care what people think.  I swim in the lake or a pool.  I just like the fact that I'm getting out there and doing something healthy for myself.

Living in Sun City AZ.  We have 7 recreation centers all with pools.  Of course we are an over 55 age group.  I see all sizes from boney to extreme morbidly obese.  All are welcome never a word said.  We accept all.

being a senior the only swimming or pool exercise classes I participate in are at the senior center or the Y and everyone there is very accommodating.
I do notice at the beach there can be some rude remarks but if you dress (bathing suit) appropriately hold your head up high and smile - you are who you are!   #%*^@ them

HI,

I am sorry, can not offer any suggestions. I only go swimming at my girlfriend's pool in the summer. I know that there are many physical apprearances at the beach. I think that is one place that all kinds of weight are accepted. I am not sure if there is a beach in your area. I know where I live there are only a few months to swim outdoors. I normally do not swim during off season times.

I hope there are some suggestions that will benefit you.

I don't have experience at a pool but do believe the YMCA would be the place to start'

I have not been swimming since I had my surgery. I love to swim and grew up around water and though I would go swimming occasionally before surgery, you will not catch me anywhere near water now. In fact I do not own a swimsuit or even shorts. Although I was self conscious and endured lots of ignorant comments before surgery I just cannot bring my self and my excess skin to be in the public scrutiny now. Also I do not drive and so access to a pool is hard for me as are the fee charges for public pool. I suppose I could get my husband to drive me to a nearby beach at night?! Might be fun and also dangerous. So until someone comes up with a magic pill to get rid of excess skin I will be staying DRY!

I tell people to join a water aerobics class.  Those are YOUR people.  I've yet to go to a water aerobics class filled with gym bunnies.  They are always filled with seniors with bad joints and obese people who need the water to maneuver.  A great time is usually had by all, and no one is there to judge.  People outside of the pool may make a snide comment... but my response was always "I don't see you in here bettering yourself!"

I think a water aerobics class would be great if there were one closer but there's not.  I have visited a water park since surgery and it was ok.  We have some great friends who have a great pool so I usually just go there.  It is so much fun.

I go to a local fitness center and try to time it when not a lot of others are there plus i always go with at least one person I know and they are great help if someone says or does something mean. They usually say or do something that makes me smile so whatever happenend does not get to me as bad. Also some places have programs for arthritic people and will allow people with other proplems to join. There is also the silver sneaker program for older people. Some rec centers/hospitals ect offer hanicap swim programs.
