I really have no idea. I don't really know of anywhere local to me, but I was thinking a gym that has a pool, or at the Y.

I really can't suggest any "safe" zones but it aggravates me so much when I hear these nasty comments referred to obese people. I am even hearing it from people who have had bariatric surgery. I sometimes think they forget where they come from. I would like to share this with you though. About a year ago I was visiting my family in England (which is where I am originaly from), a cousin of mine came to visit me at my mother's house where she saw an old picture of me from my heavy days, even though she has seen me a couple times since my weight loss, she looked at the picture and said to me, "wow you are so beautiful now, not like back when you looked like Ursula", for those who have seen the movie The Little Mermaid,  she was referring to the morbidly obese wicked sea hag!  Needless to say I was so upset and told her so. It really makes u think that when people make these remarks, what they really thought of you back when.

Thanks for letting me share that with you.

Pool ideas
Locally we have only a public pool, and the schedule does not allow for anything other then swim team and an open session, Here the only alternative is asking the local hotel/motels to use the pool in their facility,, early morning work best as most customers are packing up and leaving so mornings are usually pretty quiet. the down side is some require a fee, but what the hey it would be worth the effort and a couple of bucks.

I used to only swim at night - in the neighborhood pool, a friend's apartment complex, etc

Now I use a conceller right to the edge of the pool, I unwrap and jump in one motion.  I don't think I'll ever be comfortable to be seen without one.  I was even this way at my lowest weight @140 lbs, so I know that's my own body image problem.

The only place I felt comfortable swimming in public was at my Water Aerobics (Aquasize) Class.  Everyone there was in it for the same reason and the ages were from 21 to 71 so it seems.  And they showed you the proper way to exercise in the water without hurting yourself.  It was at the local High School through their community education and parks and rec program.  Good Luck!

Not sure anywhere in public is guaranteed "safe" from RUDE, UNCALLED FOR comments from people who don't have a clue!

I'd say the safest place it is your own pool or family or friends pool who know you  and LOVE you.

I found that going to a water aerobics class helped as far as exercise and got some good swimming in.  In the class, were people in my situation, joints hurt, etc..... It was so much easier in the water.  It's sad that people don't raise their children to show respect, not to say things to hurt other people.

I agree with Britt,  family and friends pools are the safest, unless you want to find a water aerobics class.

Any rehab facility is a good place to swin/swimercise without "judgement"...You may have to pay a small daily fee or a monthly due...but it's worth it.  And you might even be able to get advice from the PT or aqua-therapist.

I'm the former fat cow but now I'm the PHAT (pretty, hot, & tempting) cow and I swim every early Sqaturday mornings at 4:30 at my local gym. Sometimes I go during the week but my time never changes from 4:30. No children are ever up that early and I would even say only the serious at heart about fitness are at the gym that early.

Even when I was huge, I used to swim in motel pools when we were on vacation.  I swam in the river down from my house and I went to the community pool in the summertime.  I didn't pay any attention to what anyone had to say about my size.  I knew I was huge, I'd heard all the comments that could ever be made when I was growing up and then when I was on my own.  I guess I was immune to the bad remarks.  I just knew that I wanted to go swimming and if someone didn't like how I looked in a swimming suit, then that was their problem, not mine.  Now that I live here in Arizona, I have my own pool in the backyard.  I also will go to the recreation centers and use the pool there but it's ok there because I might have a lot of hanging skin due to the surgery but the other seniors there are just as wrinkled and funny looking as me so it doesn't matter.  It's the ones that think they can wear 2 piece suits at 85 years old that make me look the other way though, lol.
