When will I learn to eat slowly?

It was time again for my almost monthly "foamies" episode.  I have already gotten ham, turkey and chicken stuck in my chest. Tonight it was fish. Tilapia to be precise.

I came home from work and was in a hurry to cut the lawn before sunset. I practically inhaled the fish which I cooked on a Foreman grill.  So i had to sit in agony for about ten minutes feeling like I was being strangled.. until the discomfort subsided. So I saved no time by trying to eat fast.

For those of you suggesting that I use some kind of sauce on the fish to make it more moist.. I'm not much of a sauce guy.. especially if it adds carbs, fats or sodium.   Or if you suggest baking it with liquid.. ..Well.. once again, I was in a hurry.

That's what happened to me with my salmon yesterday. This is so new for me. I remember being able to eat an entire 12 inch sub in 10 minutes. Now it takes me 25 minutes to eat 1/2 cup of beans.

Hopefully, I'll learn very soon.
Both praise and blame cause concern,
For they bring people hope and fear.
The object of hope and fear is the self
For, without self, to whom may fortune and disaster occur?
Therefore,
Who distinguishes himself from the world may be given the world,
But who regards himself as the world may accept the world.

I never had this and don't really understand what it means but then again I have drank with meals since the get go, I don't believe in the dry food idea, it makes no sense to me to have my food be bone dry.  And frankly I have never had this happen or gotten anything stuck.  Not to say that I have never eaten too much and felt full, but I try to pay close attention and not over eat, the clues are obvious if you pay close attention.  Oh yeah and I don't eat slow, I eat normally and always have, I can't eat hot food cold or cold food warm.  And I am at goal at 5 years out.  Thats my goal, not my surgeons super inflated number for his success and not mine.

Heidi! Thanks for what you wrote. I eat so very little at almost 9 months out. I don't eat slow. I chew very well but I chew fast and then I eat another bite. I had cold food warm and hot food cold. hate it! I don't really drink with my meals but if I need to swallow a sip then I do.  I asked my doc about the eating slow thing. To this day, I have never ONCE thrown up. I have only had one thing "feel stuck" it was dry chicken breast and I shouldn't have eaten it. Other than that, I am good to go! I still get frustrated I can't eat slower. So I asked the doc what it is doing to me if it doesn't make me sick....he said, nothing.

That said, I am just enjoying my quick little meal.

High five girlfriend...I am like you...accept I can eat anything hot or cold.  I have gotten food stuck, just from eating too fast it just feels like a lump of rice stuck in your chest, but also don't know what the foamies are.  I am 9 mo post op and have stopped losing but I know It will take me years to reach my physical and mental goals, I'm happy where I am now because I don't remember being this small in my life...I will work at my own pace....you look great by the way!!!

I have always been a human combine and still struggle with that-I eat too fast a lot of the time which results in vomiting. As to the tilapia, marinate it for about 20 minutes in a ziplock bag with lime or lemon juice and a little Tabasco sauce and a sprinkle af Lawry's seasoned salt. Heat the oven to 350 and put a little olive oil in a baking dish and dump the fish and all the marinade into the di****hen top it with McCormick seafood rub, but you could use a salt free seasoning of your choice instead. Bake uncovered for about 20 to 25 minutes until fork tender. Goes down very well for me.

The upper part of the stomach has many mucus creating "pipes."  As you go further down the stomach wall, you have more acid producers and less mucus producers.  When an RNY'er gets their gut stapled off, the food aggravates the stomach lining and produces mucus (instead of acid - or far less acid) and sometimes this mucus comes up into the esophogus and into our mouths.  this is called the foamies.

O I C...once in a while when I eat too much I burp or try to burp and it feels like something weird wants to come up instead...that's probably the foamies...but have never had a big prob with it...i'm deathly afraid of vomiting so I try to be as good as possible to myself.
