After having RNY, you should always be on some kind of acid reducer.  After you get your reflux under control, you may be able to switch to OTC medication, but you can't ever completly stop it.

If the acid reflux was so severe that it burned your vocal cords then you need to be on PPI's and probably for a long time, if not forever.  All RNY's should be on a PPI for the first year  but unfortunatley not all surgeons do this.  Our pouches are new and we are sensitive to ulcers and reflux.  Many of us are lucky and dont' suffer from reflux but there are still some that do and it can be severe.  Taking a PPI for the first year can prevent major damage.

Make sure you get a script for Protonix, Nexium or equivalent and dont go off of it.  When acid reflux gets that bad, it can cause a precancerous condition in the esophagus called Barretts but you can prevent that by keeping the acid levels low.

With proper treatment froggie will go away. If froggie does not go away you seriously need to seek out other help, a gastroenterologist. You will do well, just get help to stop reflux, reflux causes Barotts esophogus.
