Beef Jerky question

I been reading that alot of you are eating beef jerky.  Is this the regular beef jerky or those slim jim things?  Are they high in protein or something?  I would think it would be bad for us.  My hubby bought me a package of the plain beef jerky today.

I've eaten both kinds of beef jerky.  However, my husband cannot tolerate it at all.  Good luck.

When I was banded and had a pouch/stoma beef jerky and turkey jerky was one of the few foods I could eat. Took forever, lots of chewing, very filling, decent protein.

i eat the reg beef jerky as a snack sometimes. the one i usually buy has 15 grams of protein in 1 oz and is softer than alot of them i have tried so its a good way to get some protein in esp if lacking for the day.

I started eating beef jerkey at about 2 months post op.  Its high in protein, but very high in sodium.  But I drink ALOT of water throught the day, and i never ADD salt to anything.  If you can tolerate it...Go for it! Great source of protein! I get reg beef jerky, the slim jim things but its by Jack Links), and teriyaki (sp?)   Good luck!

I LOVE Beef Jerky.  I usually buy the 1.5oz pkgs by Jack Links -- either the teriyaki or Sweet 'n hot.  They both have 21g protein in them.  I have a package in the car on a trip to eat as a snack when I'm driving, too -- along with a 20oz bottle of the IsoPure Zero Carb Alpine Punch.  For an 8 hour drive to see my son in WV at college, I've already consumed 60g of protein just driving down the road.

As someone else said, it IS high in sodium, so if you need to watch your sodium intake due to high BP or swelling in the feet/ankles, I wouldn't eat it more than a couple times a month.  I usually have it for a weekend snack when I tend to not eat "on schedule" just to get my protein in for the day.  Just be sure to chew it to a pulp before swallowing.

But doesn't it also have a lot of sugar?  I was going to buy some a couple of days ago but changed my mind when I read the nutritional information.

It depends on which brand you get and the flavor.  This is the info on the back of the Jack Links Sweet 'n Hot Beef Jerky:

% Daily Value*
Total Fat 1.5 g 2%
   Saturated Fat 0.5 g 3%
   Trans Fat 0 g
   Polyunsaturated Fat 0 g
   Monounsaturated Fat 0 g
Cholesterol 35 mg 12%
Sodium 780 mg 33%
Potassium 0 mg 0%
Total Carbohydrate 8 g 3%
   Dietary Fiber 0 g 0%
   Sugar 6 g
Protein 25 g 50%

I can tolerate 10 - 12g sugar per serving, so the 6g in the jerky is ok with me.  You just have to work it in to your meal plan for the day.  I don't generally go over 20 - 25g of sugar on any given day.  But for 25g of protein, I don't mind spending the 6g of sugar.

I am surprised by all the people that can tolerate it.  I used to love it (pre- WLS days) but now, I can't tolerate it at all! I tried it just a few days ago and threw up for 30 minutes after swallowing a bite....  No more jerky for me!

It might just be to early out for you for jerky. I was 6 months out before I even dared to try it. Try it again in a few months and see how it goes.
