what supplements can you take together?

I know you should spread out when you take your vitamins and supplements, but are there any you can take together?  It's so hard to remember to take them all throughout the day.

Currently I take my multi-vitamin with breakfast, my calcium a couple of hours later, my B12 in the afternoon, and then another multi-vitamin with dinner.  I want to start taking biotin.  Do I have to take that separate as well or can I take it WITH one of the others?

Thanks

you can take your multi and calcium together if your multi has no iron it.

Really the only ones you cannot take together are calcium and iron.  So if your multi has iron, you cannot take your multi with your calcium.  If your multi does not have iron, you can take it with your calcium.  You can take your B12 with your multi and take your biotin at the same time.  All the B vitamins like to be together and you have a bunch of B's in your multi so it makes sense to take them all together.

Are you only taking calcium once a day, though?  You need at least 1500 mg and people can only absorb about 500 mg at a time, so you should be taking at least three separate doses.

I was told to take 2 tums twice a day.  So 600 mg twice. Is that not enough?

Two Tums twice a day is definitely not enough.  Tums is calcium carbonate, and you need lots of stomach acid to break that down so it can be absorbed, but you make very little stomach since you had RNY.  One study found people that lack stomach acid only absorbed about 4% of the calcium from calcium carbonate.  So if you're taking 1200 mg worth of Tums, you're only getting about 48 mg of calcium a day.  And you need 1500 - 2000 mg.

You need calcium citrate, not carbonate.  500 mg three or four times a day.

Is tums all you are taking?  If so, you are in big trouble.  First of all, tums are calcium carbonate which we can't absorb.  We need to take calcium citrate and you need to take a minimum of 1500-1800mg a day, divided into 3 daily doses atleast 2 hours apart and not within 2 hours of your iron or thyroid medication, and not more than 630mg at a time.

You need to take 2 multi vitamins a day, centrum is a good option.  I take the centrum silver since it has no iron in it, so this way I can take it with my calcium.  Since it has no iron in it, you have to take a separate iron supplement.

You need to take B12 - either sublingual 1000mcg a day or monthly injections - once you get your labs done - hopefully at 3 months, you can adjust your dose accordingly.

Iron - you need to take a minimum or 18-27mg of elemental iron but most take atleast 45-65mg along with vitamin C.  Vitamin C - 200mg per 30mg of iron.

Vitamin D= please get your level checked.  Almost everyone is deficient preop and needs to take megadoses but most dont' know it.  If you dont' know your level, take a minimum of 5,000units of dry D3 daily.

If your multi has no iron in it, then you can take a multi and calcium together. Calcium and vitamin D should be taken together. All the vitaminB's should be taken together. Iron and vitaminC should be taken together. Vitamin A should never be taken with any anti seizure medication like Topamax, neurontin or any others.

Seeing that you've been Tums is fine post-op, I'm not really surprised no one went over this with you.  Please heed our advice -- Tums and Flintstones gave me Rickets and a ferritin level of 7

You've been told what you can take together, so I won't go ove rthat again.

I'll reiterate -- you need to beef up your supplement schedule, or you'll end up where *I* was -- and where I am now -- heavily supplementing with very expensive iron to try and keep a needle out of my vein to avoid infusions (that come with a myriad of side effects).  Rickets are painful, and entirely avoidable as well, simply by taking the correct calcium (which, let me reiterate, you are not.)

If you need help with this, we are more than willing to help.  All you have to do is ask.

I definatley need help with this.  Could you give me a list of what I should be taking and how often.  I was told 1 chewable multi-vitamin twice a day, B-12 once a day, and of course the 2 tums twice a day.  I get that the tums is not enough, but can you tell me what and how much to take instead of it as well as any others I should be taking?
