Can you take excedrin after RNY?
Hello everyone! I have not had surgery yet however I am trying to learn all I can beforhand. I see alot of post how you cant have caffeine in the preop diet and than afterwards. My problem is not coffee or soda I am addicted to excedrin!!! I know I need to get off of it but every morning if I dont take it I get a headache and I know I have to be addicted to the caffeine in it. I will ask the surgeon all this but in other peoples experience can you have pills after surgery and this one? Is it too hard to swallow or does caffeine do something bad? I should probably try to get myself off before hand....any thoughts??? Thanks!!!
Yes, you have have pills after surgery. However, they usually need to be approved first due to some pills needing stomach acid to break down certain pills, or some things (such as motrin) we can not take because it *can* cause ulcers. (Which is sooo bad for me, because I use to LIVE on Ibuprophen). I highly doubt you can have excederin due to the caffine, but you will have to check with your doctor.

You need to get yourself off the Excedrin.. not only does it have caffeine in it but it also contains aspirin.. aspirin is something that you should never take.. It WILL cause ulcers.. you will be allowed to take Tylenol.. I know it never works good,, but after the surgery it is actually working for me..
Your surgeon will have you on liquids only after the surgery.. that will include all meds too.. all vitamins will be chew-ables.. there is a liquid Tylenol too but it has a lot of sugar and I could not stand it.. I took the teen dissoluble ones and it worked great..
Usually after about a month or so your surgeon will release you to start taking pills but they need to be small and easy to swallow and digest... we no longer have stomach acid to dissolve the pills... I am 4 months out and I still use chewable calcium as we can absorb that so much better than pills and the calcium amounts we have to take would be a lot of little pills or splitting big ones.. we only absorb 500mg calcium at one time so it is spread out through the day..
Remember this is just how my surgeon did things and his and the nuts advice... Your surgeon will tell you what to do.. but I KNOW that all surgeon tell you NO ASPIRIN or NSAIDS ever.. so get off the Excedrin before you get to that stage...
hope this helps..
huggs..

Excederin and other NSAIDS are known to cause ulcers, and when you're working with a tiny pouch, an ulcer in it is HUGE to deal with. If you've got to have caffeine after your RNY, take up coffee or something else non-carbonated to get your fix.
