vitamin deficiency question

I had rny 6 years ago and  have been very happy with the results. I have started at 275 and got down to 150 and maintained that weight  for years, until a year ago when I had my daughter.I gained some pregnancy weight and currently weigh 170. That isn't the issue though. I am chronically deficient in vitamin D and vitamin A. It doesn't matter what  kind of supplement or how many or how high the dose is, I am just not absorbing D and A. I have tried sublingual and liquid as well and my levels stay the same. When I had my daughter I had a csection and my ob ordered a multivitamin drip before I left the hospital...that was the only time in 5 years that all of my labs came out great but that only lasted 6 months. My vitamin A and D levels are currently  both below 5. My primary doctor is at a loss of how to handle this issue. I do get b12 injections and my b12 levels have always been fine and Vitamin A and D do come in injectable form too but I can't find a pharmacy who carries it . It would be great if I could just go into the hospital twice a year and get a multivitamin drip but that doesn't seem to be an option. Anyone else having this issue and how is your doctor treating it?

When you say "no matter what kind of supplement or how high the dose is" let me clarify just a few things?

You are ordering water-miscible or "dry" formulations of vitamin D3?  Not the Drisdol D2 50,000 IU oil capsule?  Correct?  Not the 2,000 or 5,000 IU of D3 that is available at CVS or Walgreens?  If so, how much are you taking per day?

And for the A, you are ordering the water-miscible or "dry" formulations of the retinyl esthers such as retinyl palmitate or retinyl acetate?  Not beta-carotene in oil?  If so, how much are you taking per day?

I take the dry forms of both D3 and  vitamin A.  Current dose is... D3 50,000 X 2 and A is 25,000 x 3  daily...I have been on higher doses in past and still labs are low.

I am currently giving myself vitamin A injections, intramuscularly, every day.  Taking vitamin a in retinyl palmitate forms didn't even work - and I was taking a boat load. I'm not sure what's going to happen now - if I'll have to take vitamin a injections for life or what. I just know that it's very scary, especially since I am already legally blind in one eye.

ElonMyForehead ~It's frustrating  to be in a position where it seems no matter how much you take in the correct form, it doesn't make a difference.  I haven't noticed any problems yet from the vitamin A deficiency but due to being chronically deficient in vitamin D  I have osteoporosis at the age of 38. How did you get your hands on the vitamin A ?  ...I can't find a pharmacy who carries it ,nor  do any of their suppliers.

I have a few questions for you because I had a terrible time absorbing vitamin A and my NUT did some research and from what she found, I made some changes and now my levels are great.  How is your zinc level?  If you are zinc deficient, you will never absorb vitamin A.  Do you take Topamax or any other antiseizure medication - Neurontin, etc?  These medications block the absortion of vitamin A.  This is what happened to me.  I take Topamax and it was blocking my vitamin A.  Do you take steroids?  These also block the absorbtion of vitamin A.

I now take my vitamin A at a higher dose and at a different time of the day as my Topamax and my vitamin A went up to the 70's -normal 40-98.  Please do something, you can lose your eyesight from vitamin A deficiency.

There is someone on the DS board that gets vitamin D infusions, you can go to that board and look for Julie.  She might also know about vitamin A, if any of my options don't work for you.

I take 50,000 units daily of vitamin A but I take it all in one dose.  I don't know if that makes a difference.  I get it from Vitalady.com - it is dry vitamin A from BioTech - palimate.

Vitamin D - I have no suggestions - how much are you taking?  I take 50,000 units 3 times per week but many take it daily.  DS patients take up to 100,000 units daily - have you gone up that high?  Was it Dry D3 from vitalady.com?
