PLEASE READ!!! LICENCE SUSPENED!!
Interesting history of your doc:
Steeb, Glen David
01-06-1996 License placed on probation 5 years
06-20-2001 License reinstated without restriction
09-22-2004 License suspended for 1 yr, eff. 01-01-2004
05-30-2006 License reinstated on probation 5 years
But I can't find anything that points to why he lost his license those times or this time. Just doesn't seem like an isolated instance.

So your surgeon has his medical license suspended and cannot practice. It doesn't say if it's a permanent or temporary suspension. The fact that he's on "personal leave" could mean so many things. Maybe he's in Haiti helping with recovery efforts there, or maybe he's in rehab. The fact is, it can't be changed.
Your surgeon is in New Orleans. I can guarantee you he is NOT the only bariatric surgeon there. I bet you could even use the OH forum to help you find one. Don't panic now, keep your head and keep moving forward.
(And just FYI, I think the reason this message caused confusion is because you posted it in the main forum. It might have been more well received in the Louisiana forum.)
Best of luck to you in your journey, and I hope you are able to find a new surgeon soon.

If the board of medicine suspends your license, that's a big deal. If they suspend it more than once that's a REALLY big deal.
I don't think he's in Haiti, he did something wrong. You don't volunteer your time in another country and get your license suspended for it.
I think the OP dodged a bullet.
