I suppose our muscles are continually breaking and down and rebuilding/repairing all day.  If the body needs protein it will take from our muscles if it is not available from food sources at the moment, so breaking it up with smaller yet frequent amounts would lessen the muscle atrophy and promote fat loss.  That is what makes sense to me, I could be off on my assumptions.
