What can I do if lap band has been unsuccessful for me?

Wow. I seem to have struck a nerve with you, Ms. ?
The reason the diet industry is recession-proof is that we chronic dieters go from one magical promise to the next.
The point of sharing my personal experiences and discoveries freely with others has NOTHING to do with "finding fault" or blame; it's about offering a means of getting off that roller-coaster. It does not involve brainwashing or suffering!
In fact, aside from having my stoma stretched open 10 weeks post-op I haven't suffered in the 7 years I've been post-op; I went from 3X to size 12 on my 1st anniv., size 10 by 2nd anniv & size 8 since before by 3rd anniv and remain a size 8.

So, ranting aside, I'm still waiting to hear if I understood Chabela's post correctly...

Actually, BULL****  Snake Oil Salesman type Bull****

You invite people to your profile page..from there, they are invited to your webpage where they can buy your (drastically price-reduced, quantities limited, so much for the sharing "FREELY," eh?) CDs on how to be a success...and, btw, the link to the hoodies and stuff doesn't work.  What?  Not enough takers to keep that going?

You use this forum to identify and latch on to desperate people and milk them for money...which makes you one of the roller coaster operators.

This kind of using others is despicable.

Please don't listen to anyone who will tell you that the lack of weight loss is your fault because of self-sabotage. That is a load of crap. My doctor was very clear to me that it was NOT my fault, that the band failed me. I did not fail the band.

I got insurance approval for a revision to RNY, and it was the best decision ever. I have lost 108 pounds in under 9 months. I'm thrilled with my RNY.

As for your husband, it is not his body, so it is not his choice. His opinion on the matter doesn't count. Seriously. It is YOUR body and YOUR health. Don't ask for permission to have the surgery. If you want the surgery, have it.

~My story on my revision to RNY from the lap-band is in my profile~

Pam's profile is worthwhile reading. Her recent photos show a stunning transformation.
It is true that the RNY remains "the gold standard of bariatric surgery" and I am very glad I chose it, over 7 years ago.
It is true that it is close to physiologically impossible to NOT lose weight during the 1st 6 months.
It is also true that bariatric surgeons routinely urge patients to lose as much as possible in the first 9-12 months, "before the cravings return."
It is also true that bariatric surgeons have dramatically increased the number of revisions they perform on patients who have "stretched out" their RNY pouches - meaning that UNLESS a patient tackles the behaviors that have kept them prisoners of obesity-dieting-obesity, there is a risk of regaining at least a third or more of the weight lost in the first year. I know - many are my clients! Check the surgery stats!

IF a patient does not follow the food program, the exercise program, avoids support and does not lose a single pound in 4 years -
[and I am saying, IF - because it's not clear to me whether this is something her doc's falsely accused her of or something she is stating as true;]
then the point of response remains behavioral - NOT for the purposes of blaming the patient; but to invite her to consider finding the understanding and actions that will break her cycle of "another diet failure."

RNY is the gold standard, right?

Soooo glad I got the PLATINUM standard--the DS.

Embody, I think you are blaming the victim here. Maybe that works for your clients, but that philosphy doesn't work in the long-term. Sure, she could have done lots of things to help her succeed, like not being afraid of hurting a stupid doctor's feelings and fixing this problem sooner. Bottomline: she was sold an inferior product. No matter what she did, that band was going to fail unless she was one of the supremely lucky ones.

I'm just sorry it took her 4 years to figure it out. AND, now she's worried about what her husband thinks. It seems everyone's opinion matters to her more than her own does. THAT's the biggest problem I see here.

You know, sometimes a reality check is in order. It takes a lot of calories to maintain an obese body. You have to do your part here as well. NO SURGERY TYPE FIXES WHITE CARBS, that one is on us. You aren't motivated for exercise? So what? Most of us aren't, we do it because it's a responsibility. Fills every 2-3 months? I don't believe it, fills every 2-3 months for 5 years would mean you have about 50cc in your 4cc band.

You have to do your part too. Look, I get it that the band is a waste of money but in five years you still haven't changed any of your behaviors no WLS type is going to work. I don't care if it is RNY or DS, you have to do your part or even if you get another surgery type all the pounds plus friends will come back.

Your husband isn't living in your body, you are. You decide what is right for you.

Boy - this post started a **** storm didn't it?

There are many here who have had a band fail them.
You can revise to another surgery as many of us have.
It is the best decision I ever made.

But before you look at another surgery, you must take a look inside.
Why did the band fail and what are you willing to do about it?
Take the time to do the inside work before you do anything else.
I wasted 2 years of my life on the band. I lost 20 and gained 30.
Multiple fills and unfills. Barium swallows.
In that time, I was diagnosed with diabetes, started having swelling in my legs and terrible back pain.

I did what I had to do to save my life.

As for the husband? Not his life, not his choice. Just my opinion. Your partner should support you in whatever it takes to improve your quality of life. If they don't...some serious questions should be asked.

Be bold. Take care of yourself.

Good luck with your journey.

Chabela, the band doesn't work for MOST of the people it is sold to.  But a surgery to remove the band can be combined with a revision to a more effective procedure.  I went from the band to the DS.  I lost more weight--and never gained it back--in two months with the DS than I did in three years with the band.

You don't "GO" to your old doctor to get your records...you just sign a release and they send them.  But do go to a place with doctors who are experienced taking out the band and replacing it with something better...not just a band factory.  Because I'm a DS person, I would go to one of these:

I never lost weight with my band - got revised to vsg & lost it all.  Plus I can eat all types of food & eat in public with no sliming & foaming.  It was so great to get that port out!

Lots of people fail with the band.  Its a sucky product.  Don't sweat it, get something better.
