surgery secret
At first I was all about keeping it a secret. I told one "friend" at work. She's a loud mouth so I have no doubt that she has told others. I then told my boss---mistake. He went and told the secretary to make sure we would be covered during my absence. The so-called friend and the secretary took on some jealous tendancies and was giving me the silent treatment for a while (they are both large).
Now I don't really care who knows. I'm not embarrassed at all like I was at first.

I am scheduled for RNY on the 17th - this month. I have a job that doesn't require I get approval for time off. So I haven't told anyone except one friend whom I trust. The afternnon before my surgery I'm going to turn in my timesheet and leave. Partly because I have several co-workers and my supervisor, who have been very unkind to me and I want to watch their faces as the weight melts off me "magically". Then when they ask I'm going to very casually say, "oh, you know the old diet and exercise routine." If I am asked about the timeoff I'm going to say it was to spend R&R time at home with my husband. Which is all true.
Best wishes on your surgery too

i always wonder why folks lie about this...
I mean really at this point in my journey folks who barely know me notice I've lost weight...
I am not one to lie. If they ask me how lost it and i've not been honet about having surgery what do I say "eating healthier"? it's not actually true. there are almost no fruits or veggies in my diet, there are no grains or healthy carbs such as whole wheat or brown rice
"eating smaller amounts" works but then they might ask about willpower and that's a lie to at this point.....
and if they go out with me and I eat 4 bites of soup and 2 bites of salad (such as dinner last night with a friend) what's my excuse then???

Like you, I did not want to tell anybody that I was having WLS. I work with a bunch of snakes that live for gossip, so I did not want to tell them anything. I wanted it to be my decision. Therefore, I did as much research as I possibly could and made my own decision, with my surgeon's recommendation, of course.
When people asked me how I was losing weight so fast, I just told the that I was eating a lot less and exercising a lot more, which is the absolute truth.
Best of luck on your surgery. Just remember that you do not have to tell anybody if you do not want to. It is your body and your decision.

I am telling most people that I am having my hiatus hernia/esophagus-stomach problems sorted. I live and work in a small, rural community and really don't want my life discussed by all and sundry. I will be telling my close friends and have told my immediate family.
I suppose our reluctance to share openly is related to the horrid comments we see about fat people and obesity. This is the one form of hatred that is still politically correct..

I really dont feel that it anyones business. I said I was going in for a hernia repair (which i thought they were going to do) I have been losing weight but they see me daily and I said when I got back that my dr. gave me sh... about my weight and I am following a strict dr.s diet Which all is pretty much true. So I ealyy havent had to explain anything! I did tell one of my closest friends at work i know I could trust just in case something should ever happen at work (health wise) that someone knew.
Im not ashamed and all my family and close friends know but i dont have that type of relationship with people at work and I dont feel they need an explanation.
Good Luck!

I've told a couple friends and my family. But I'm a stay at home mom and I don't really get out anywhere.
If I was working, I'd tell my boss only, and possibly the employees as "I need to have surgery done" and let it be at that. If someone asked, I'd tell them I don't want to discuss my personal life at work.
