I wouldn't have told them that I was having surgery at all because now you have to make something up to explain what it is.  I guess you could say something about "female surgery" as that will definitely make the guys stop asking.  And because you're a female, it's not a complete fabrication...

Did you tell your co-workers?  I am having RNY on Thursday the 18th and haven't told anyone as yet.  I am wondering what the fallout will be when I start dropping the pounds......

Absolutely!  I have been an open book about my surgery to everyone in my life -- family, coworkers, friends, clients -- anyone who wants to know.  It is a personal decision though and not everyone is comfortable sharing this information with others.

For me, I feel that I suffered from the disease of obesity and I wasn't ashamed that I was getting medical treatment for that condition.

I am scheduled for RNY on 2/18.  I haven't told anyone but I am considering telling my boss that I am having a hernia repaired just in case I don't get to return to work as scheduled....

Congrats on your surgery date!  I also choose not to tell people, except a few friends.  Now I regret telling a couple of them...but I just said I had minor hernia repair (I am a lapband patient).

Of course, as the other post said, saying female issues will keep men at bay but not necessarily women...we are too inquisitive (ok, nosey!).  Praying all goes well for you!

I agree.  I debated for months on telling people because I didn't want the negative comments and suggestions.  I was afraid if I saw one eye roll from a 'friend' I would beat them.  So I kept it quiet until the day before surgery and called my closest friends... they were all "wow, congratulations!"  "That's awesome"  and "I'm proud of you".  Not one negative comment.. In addition, they all arranged to bring food to feed my family while I was recovering.  I am so glad I did it.  Now.. 2 1/2 weeks out, I just don't give a darn who knows.  Telling my friends (about 8) was incredibly liberating!  And gave me a sense of peace when I went to the hospital the next day.

I hope you find your answer and do well!

i live in kuwait and our national day is at the end of the month which leads into a 5 day break..but i still needed to take a day off before so i had to tell them something...i guess i could have just called in sick...the problem with saying female surgery is that i work with mostly females...they'll ask what and probably know all about whatever i say...i guess i just won't mention it again maybe people will leave me alone..i only really told my principal...i am the vp....they have watched me lose and gain weight before they'll just think it's another diet...i guess i'm scared of being talked out of it..i dont' want to hear anyones doubts and i don't feel like convincing people that i want to do this...in the end it's about me not them.
