For some reason this state does not allow that erocedure to be performed..just in the last yr vs was allowed..its all politics here...insurance comopanies a cna not even hadve it on their policies...my insiurance is from calif and it was one of my choices..but no surgeon hwere would do it..I could have went back home to NC and had it done but would had to have moved back for 6 months in case of complications...

You do realize that the state doesn't determine what WLS is or is not offered. It has everything to do with the actual *surgeons* that perform the surgery. If no surgeon does it, then it isn't offered. Doesn't make it illegal in the slightest. Just no one there to actually perform it.

Ask me about pregnancy after the Duodenal Switch!

They're here! My surro-sons were born July 21, 2009. Welcome to the world, Benjamin and Daniel. We love you very much!

Good thing that I didn't have to move to Mexico for 6 months to get my DS. I don't speak a word of Spanish.

I just have to challenge such an OUT THERE claim.

Where is the law that says that the state of OK does not allow the DS to be performed there?

I'm not asking what insurance companies cover...that's just a matter of who the people in the state elect to regulate their insurance companies...and in a lot of states, people keep electing folks who are there to protect the insurance companies, not the insured.  We can't do much about stupid.

Have you considered that no surgeon in the state has the SKILL needed to perform the procedure and that's why it's not offered?  Just because no one performs that procedure locally does not mean it is illegal there.

Please don't spread such stories unless you can document them.

Well, even if that is the case, you can always come across the border just 50 miles or so to Denton, TX and let Dr. Daryl Stewart do the deed for ya ..    (ya might have to cash pay, though)

I want to dispell Non-DSer misinformation.  The question raised about healthy attitude.

To me health attitude means eating a balanced diet high in antioxidants, unprocessed proteins, complex carbohydrates and good fat choices within the nutritional goals of that surgeries plan.  Pleasurable foods that provide lesser nutritional value for special occasions but not completely off limit.  Foods that are know to increase risk of cancer should be avoided.

In making those kinds of changes a person can actually cleanse their taste-buds and enjoy  Greek yogurt with fruit as much as they used to enjoy Haagen Dazs.  It does not mean Haagen Daz is a bad food, it means the quantity becomes a half cup instead of a pint and it is eaten a few times a year and not daily.

Salmon in a soy ginger garlic glaze can be enjoyed and savored just as much as salmon in a brown sugar butter crust.  Sweet potatoes don't need a praline crust to be delicious, they don't even need butter.  I have had a bite of General Tao's chicken twice since surgery but hot and sour soup a dozen times,  I get pleasure from both.  I used to eat about 3000 calories of chinese in one sitting.  Selecting hot and sour over General Tao's is part of a healther attitude.  Choosing to making Tao's sauce over tofu instead of buying takeout, healthier attitude.

I am happy for DSers that your surgery allows you to eat the balance that you feel comfortable with allowing more fat and protein.  Most people cannot have surgery and eat exactly what they did preop, especially the simple carbohydrates. Changing food selection does not mean deprivation.  It means having the protein quantities right for my body and filling the rest in with what I view as balanced healthy choices.

I am not dissing the DS diet, I have seen Val's and she has some great menus and I am a huge fan of bacon wrapped jalapeno peppers so I can enjoy fat with the best of them just not as much.  Most of my healthier attitude is eating simple carbs and breaded deep fried foods in extreme moderation.

Please don't assume that people that adapt to what they consider healthy are deprived.

I have several friends with RnY.  Some of them have "planned dumps," where they crawl into bed and then eat the donut and get crazy sick for a half hour. They wouldn't GO through all that if they didn't feel deprived without it.  When I go out to lunch with friends who have had the RnY, what I hear most often is "Can I have a taste of that?  I'd love to order one of my own, but I'd dump."

So maybe so far, YOU don't feel deprived, but that doesn't mean that others are having the same experience or that your experience won't change over time.
