What's worse for RNY .. Fats or Carbs?

I never really had problems with sweets or high carb snacks. I could take them or leave them.  However, I love fatty foods.   Especially meats like beef and pork.

I had RNY in September.  My question is... Are carbs worse for me than fatty meats? Or does my pouch tend NOT to absorb the fat?

You know what Herc...good question!  I tend to not think about fats, just the carb count in various foods.  If you look at the Atkins diet I can't remember it focusing on fat but rather carbs, and that's basically what we are doing - protein protein protein....right?

Anyway, I don't worry about fat from meat personally, never have through the journey, and I am almost 11 months out.  I'm doing fine.

Like you, I never was a sweets eater....but I loved bread and potatoes but now I will just have a big (big for us wls folks) steak and call it good and not even want those items.

Also, I don't eat french fries, not because of the fat but the starch from the potato...hmmm will be interesting to see the replies!

I need to attach my own question to this. Why is it that I hear so much focus on protein all the time? I know we need to have a certain amount of protein daily, 60 to 100 depending on your surgeon and NUT. Why is it though that people don't seem to be worrying about getting in a balanced diet? We can't eat mainly protein and keep it up for life and expect that to be good for our bodies. I know it will take the weight off faster, thus Atkins and South Beach converts, but in the long run, you can't do that forever. One has to eat a balanced diet or your body suffers. I only ask this because I'm eating very balanced, and question if I'm doing this all wrong even though I'm having good results. I don't see my surgeon for 5 more months, so I look to this forum, and it seems like I'm not doing it right. Should I worry or just keep on truckin' along?? :D

Keep on truckin!  Looks like whatever you're doing is going well for you!

I do eat a balanced diet - veggies, salads etc.  I just stay away or have in moderation the breads, potatoes and the salad dressing especially!

I had an orange last night! haha  I don't just wake up and eat only protein, but it is my main focus.

I think that if we eat carbs WITH the protein is a problem....oh who knows, I would have to look that one up.

Anyway, you're doing great as I can see from your ticker!

Sounds good! I just worry so much 'cause I know even this method of weight loss can fail too if we aren't careful, and I never want to go back up again. My aunt gained back all her weight after this surgery, 'cause she never was able to mentally think "healthy food", and I watched her die from the horrors of obesity, which was heartbreaking. I feel like this is my last chance to do it right, and I want to make sure I'm doing it, and not screwing it up.  Worry worry worry! :D  I need to join a meditation group! Hee hee.

I made a post last night about the little things after wls....I am putting the link below so you can see what wonders we take for granted and hopefully can be mindful of to never go back to...I Know for me reading what people wrote has actually made me realize what I don't want to face again - EVER!

Hope it cheers you up!  Some of them are VERY funny!

Erika-  I read your post last night it was FUNNY- all I could think about was trying to put my knee highs on an being able to cross my legs and pit them on. I can now, not as comfortably as i would like but that will get here!

The focus is on protein is because if there's one thing you have to get in after water, it's protein - otherwise your body starts to cannibalize itself. And after a malabsorptive type of surgery, you malabsorb protein more than you do carbs. Add to that the weight loss factor, and you have the reason why protein is emphasized.

You will not suffer the effects of poor protein for some time, which is why it is not noticed until it is a real problem, rather than just a small bump in the road.

If I eat too many  carbs they tend to "ferment" in my pouch.  They give me the runs and make me so gassy that I can hardly stand to be around myself.

I'm a meat eater too.   I mostly eat lean cuts, BUT I have a weakness for stuff like oxtails, carnitas and chicharrones.    I indulge myself occasionally;  just make sure to watch portions.

So Blessed, you just gave me a craving for oxtails, babeeeee! I love me some oxtail stew with "calabaza", "chayote" and all the goodies. YUM!

It will be on my groceries list for sure!
