Haven,

I have always had my usere name and names as pseudos so I couldn't be found unless someone knows my modikar.  However, this does have me reconsidering my membership here.

I moved to another state after my WLS and there are less than 5 people here that know about my WLS!  I have a very high profile career that uses social networking.  You're forgetting that there are people who have been able to keep it out of their community.

Clearly, this was motivated to draw up exposure, increase membership, etc. thereby making the site more valuable so advertising costs may increase in price.  It's about increasing revenue / money.  It's a business decision.

The atmosphere will change here for a time but it will settle down and as new membership comes, it will always be a part of it and not be an issue.  It's the old timers they will lose and that doesn't matter when it comes to all mighty dollar.

Of course, this is just my opinion.

It's nice to "see" you again!  I have missed your presence!

I have two sides to my brain - a right side and a left side.  The trouble is sometimes there is nothing left in the right side and nothing right in the left side.

I know who you are and have loved you since 2004 !!!!

They miss you in Wisconson, by the way. The Cheese Head state wasn't the same since you left Racine. I had to move also.

Hope all is well.

 Hello Lady!

LTNS.  Good to "see" you again as well.  I've missed your rationale and your kindness.  I hope things are going well for you.

About the issue at hand -- I can understand how someone who might not be very internet savvy could be confused.  I can also understand how ignorance is typically bliss but just because someone hasn't thought of all the possibilities their actions can cause doesn't stop things from happening.  I can also understand that cir****tances change, people move on, some things people prefer to be held in a more private manner, etc.  I am also more than aware that saying (or typing) something in the spur of the moment without thinking or out of reaction to another of life's twists and turns can prompt regrets.  I'm aware because i've lived it.

The problem is that the ****e storm that this has caused is more of a reaction to a possibility instead of the realization that this has always been possible.  Perhaps some have had a false sense of security and something as simple as eliminating a step has caused an awakening but instead of being proactive to protect themselves, folks want to put things back the way they were.  Even if OH puts things back the way they were, the possibility that WHATEVER you put out there is subject for public viewing.  It seems rather simple to me.. don't ever let a secret out of the bag that you don't want repeated.

You are correct.. this was a marketing ploy and a business decision.  None of us as people matter to the business of OH.  Never have, never will.  Those that matter in our lives (family and friends) are the relationships we must strive to protect.  If those relationships are affected by our choice of being a member on a public board, then cancel that membership and move forward.  There will be those that do so and their presence will be missed by those that choose to stay but there has been a huge turnover of new faces on this site since I became a member, long before I ever arrived and that will continue to be long after I have moved on myself.

One thing we do agree on.. this is just my opinion as well.  I guess we all have them and i've always enjoyed listening to yours, even if I disagree with it.  I respect you.

~Haven

I was only pointing out that some people have kept their WLS out of their community lives.

I actually see that we agree on A LOT!

I hope to see you more!  Email me and catch me up!

or us old timers will still come here but enjoy it less. clearly, they don't care what we think.

once upon a time I had a group to talk about Binge Eating Disorder, and later one about Clean Eating.

PM me if you are interested in either of these.

With this new application I have now changed my user name on my avatar, took out the area I live and only allow "friends" into my profile.  I am usually an open book but I don't like the fact that a link to a post that I commented on or started could be put on somone's facebook where anyone could have gotten into my profile just for grins.

I know that I may have had a false sense of security before but now I feel really vulnerable with the new feature.  I am not too tech savy so I may be wrong with my impression.

Thanks for listening.

OH posts have never been "private," but allowing anyone to post another's message to a social media outlet is another level of disclosure. I am an open book and my avatar here is the same on Facebook and Twitter.

People who are more vulnerable or shy about their obesity need to be protected.

I would be ok if the function allowed only me to post my posts. I only get an "edit" option for my posts, can the same be done for "sharing?"

While the entire thread isn't visible on Facebook, it does link to the thread.

I've never been a private wls patient. I've been "out there" since 2004, but others choose to share limited details about their surgeries or keep it completely secret. I don't know what that percentage is, but this should greatly cut down on picture trails and before-and-after pictures.

Testimonials that are good will continue to be a "win-win," but this might discourage people with problems discussing it. Yes, it was always public pages (www and all), but adding the social media aspect does not seem to like the best way to address the sensitivity of obesity-related treatment.

By the way, Jeremy ... long time no see. I've gotten on a serious exercise kick since my revision in the summer. I must go hang out in the exercise forum to get some ideas about feeding my addiction.

All my best, despite the objections!

Frances
