Again,
How's it different than the people who copied and pasted threads to facebook before?
other than you now know about it.. and your false sense of security is gone?

nothing. has. changed.

Thank you for seeing my point.  Perhaps adding this button has taken one step out of someone posting a thread for others to see but those that are the kind to be malicious and underhanded don't typically mind the extra step.  It seems to add to the giddy feeling they get at poking fun of someone.

I agree.. NOTHING. HAS. CHANGED.

If OH is so much in need of increased revenues, then start charging a membership fee to be a member, and take off the DAMN links to other social networking sites....this is so wrong, and at the very least you could have done would have been to give the members here a 'heads up' notice...but apparently you care more about increased revenues than the members!!!!  In the past, you gave a 'heads' up notice when the site changed back in 2005/2006 I think...so why not NOW?!?!  Could it have been that you knew that there would be an uproar....and why only post this notice on the Main Board only AND not the other boards???  Do you know how many times I have ever come to the Main Board to read postings....only in the last couple of weeks, and I have been a member since 06/15/05!!!  So, to say that I am a lil bit PEEVED is an understatement.

I am concerned about the share button also.  I know people have always been able to cut and paste from this site but the new share button just makes it too easy.  Now, do I think the majority of OH users will ever be using this button - no I don't.

But I do know that some people who come to this site are paid to do some product marketing.  I don't have a problem with that (but I do wish there was a way that the member could share this information with post readers.  I think that is only fair - to let people know that the member is paid to highlight a product. )

I worry that OH will ask somemebers to use the share button to highlight OH.  Since I don't think too many members will really use this button, how else will OH get their name out there unless they have some members "spread the word" this way.

I would like a way to opt out of having my questions/responses shared.  OH - have you thought about doing that and maybe asking those who do not want to share to pay a membership type fee?

Lots of people are very open about their weight loss journey... and share it with everyone they can.. in hopes of helping other people.

And that's their choice.  But others who don't choose to share should have that same choice.

Maybe I just can't wrap my brain around now wanting to share such an amazing thing that changed your life in such a great way?

and you don't have a choice. someone could go up in the URL.. take your USERNAME and create an RSS feed.. and if they wanted.. they could populate a blog with just your posts... IF theywanted..
This is the internet, there is ZERO anonymity. ZERO.. I just don't think some of you realized that.

Your theory that anyone who doesn't want their info readily available on FB, Twitter, etc must mean that they are 'ashamed' of having WLS is completely unfounded.  Many use OH for SUPPORT/HELP on personal issues directly related to their chosen WLS and use their  SOCIAL NETWORK for ...well, socializing with family, friends and some even for business purposes.

I am not ashamed in the least; but I don't shove it in everyone's face either.  Yes, I had RNY, yes it's given me my life back but I certainly don't introduce myself to new people by saying, "Hi, I'm Danelle, I used to be fat; but I had gastric bypass."

Sure, making it infinitely more easy to advertise OH on social networks will bring in all sorts of interest, including the multitude of haters that believe WLS is the 'easy way out' to their door.  But hey, maybe even the trolls will be transformed.

I guess what is irksome is the fact that a help/support site needs to connect with social networking site.  Personally, I equate it to linking an AA support group with your eHarmony account.

I fully understand that some see it as a great business move, not only for OH, but for their own business that feed off the site.  I also understand that plenty of people already connect their posts about vitamins, recipes, etc with blogs and social networking also benefiting from more exposure.

In the end, I guess it IS a good eye opener.  If you're here, seeking support, be very very careful because anyone can, in spite or even a misguided effort to 'help', easily expose it all on a social network with little consideration.

I think the problem lies in believing that anything in the web 2.0 realm of things is  cordoned off as private. This IS a social networking site... In some people minds it may not be, but it is.  It just involves a topic where support and help are derived from too....

and the only way you're going to be introducing it to people you meet on YOUR facebook is if you click the link..

The only time I could see anyone's friends finding it on their facebook is if two people in the same town with the same circle of friends were on here.. and one posted to their facebook.. and similar friends saw the postings... that would be the only way  I could see it as being introduced to one's own circle of friends.......... unless you clicked the button.

Like if I were to click it now.. and it post .... there's a 99.9% chance that no one I know.. knows you. same thing with a lot of the people on here... I think there's one person on here that we both knew the same trainer.. and I don't think the trainer knew she had WLS... so that's one instance..

But its not just going to be popping up on your facebook for friends to see...
And if there's anyone nosy enough to really care or make a big deal out of your transformation or issues... then they've probably been psycho and googled you already...

I guess I'm not able to empathize because my brain doesn't understand it.. or maybe because I work on the web daily and realize there's ZERO anonymity in any way.

Brandi it DID - your theory about anonymity is NOT TRUE .  Someone posted something from in here on facebook ( and i have no way to find out who or what or to delete it ) and next thing you know two OH members in chat told me ( the same day ) that they found my FB account- with my correct last name , my place of employment , 400 of my high school and college  friends and co workers etc.

I think You are living in dreamland if you think people have to live in the same town to know you - no , they just have to recognize your face , your name , anything about you .  Then they can search for that on facebook and get a list  of pics- one of whom they will  recognize .  Its not hard.

There are members in here who have very responsible public jobs - judges , elected officials, actors etc whose careers could be fatally damaged by unwanted exposure .  Noone has the right to out us !
