Warning: Is OH Sharing our info w/ Facebook Now?

Why is everyone so up in arms?
OH has never been private anyway. That is why most folks here don't go by their real names, don't give out their location, etc.
And if someone links to THEIR Facebook, how are YOUR friends going to see it? (Unless your friends are friends?)

You're right Melting Mama.  One day not long ago I called myself further researching something that was said on here and when I Googled it I was taken right back to the thread where I originally saw it on OH!!

Happens to me every time I go to help someone out -- they ask for "XYZ," I search for "XYZ," and I'm back at the message board here.  :X

Yep - what MeltingMama said. Since anyone at all can read these forums, whether or not they are a member, all they have to do is copy the url for the thread to anywhere they want to copy it, facebook, their personal webpage, a billboard on I-405, whatever.

This is not a private space, never has been - although most people not considering or freinds/family to someone considering WLS would have little interest incruising these forums.

Having said that, it is possible that an acquaintance who stumbles upon your posts could be malicious.

 Even if OH had not added the "Share This" button on the forums, anyone could have already shared it on Facebook.  Many Facebook users have a "Share on Facebook" button added to their web browser toolbars.  OH is just getting with the times.

I understand the sentiment of feeling that this place is somewhat more private and safer.  I have felt the same way in the past.  I also now realize that this feeling is somewhat naive and unrealistic.  The world gets smaller as the web gets bigger.  

I would much rather someone stumble upon the info. than there be BIG NEON SIGNS (or little bright buttons) pointing in that direction.  I think most of us are intelligent enough to know that this is the world wide web and it is risky to post pictures and opinions.  But what I feel and I think others are voicing is that because of discrimination many of us have felt due to societies' views on obesity and the sensitivity of the nature of the topics discussed, no one wanted it to be so easy to share some of the personal and heartfelt posts from this site.  This is a place where folks can be free to be themselves, warts & all.  Facebook and sites of that sort are places where people try to put on their best 'face'.  Folks just aren't comfortable with the two personas meeting.

There are those who have never shared with their families and friends that they've even had wls, or those that are sharing concerns, issues or problems here that they would never share with old highschool or college buddies. 

Bottomline is there is a place for everything and fb, twitter and such just ain't the place I chose to share weight issues and the like!  There probably will be a mass exodus on the part of many valuable vets and a lot of frontin' on the behalf of many other folks on a site that has had and could really continue on to have a wonderfully positive effect on the lives of unhealthy hurting people in need of a place to feel that they can belong.  And all the matter of fact, truly insensitive statements that are being made are only speeding up that process. 

It's really sad...

Um anyone can post a link from this thread to another forum - just by copying the web link and pasting it over there - so nothing new!!  It doesn't mean that if someone uses that link to FB on this post that it will identify your FB ID or anything like that - it's just a link.......LOL

Nah, nah, nah - if someone copies this to some FB page I am not a friend to - and they see my pic in my avie and recognize me, then come here and read my profile - now they know WAY more about me than I care to share with them!  They would never have thought on their OWN to search me out - but with me just all out there - NOW they are some nosy bastids!
